Draft Scouting Report
Pro Comparison: Grant Williams
Summary
Hopkins is a former top-50 recruit who spent the last five years playing college basketball, beginning with his freshman season at Kentucky. He had a breakout sophomore campaign at Providence, but played a total of 17 games over the course of his next two seasons after tearing his ACL. He was finally healthy this past season at St. John’s, averaging 13.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 28.8 minutes.
About
- 2023 First-Team All-Big East as a sophomore at Providence.
- 2026 Second Team All-Big East
- 2026 Big East All-Tournament Team
Strengths
- Strong and physical combo-forward who can play through contact and is an excellent offensive rebounder.
- Mismatch type scorer who has the versatility to allow his match-up to dictate where and how he attacks.
- Made late gains with three-point shooting that could prove to be his swing skill. Was 12-20 from behind the arc in six total post-season games this year.
Weaknesses
- He has the size of an NBA wing, but is more comfortable defending 4s than 3s.
- His conditioning has been inconsistent over the years, but he’s gotten himself into good shape for the pre-draft process, weighing in at 219 pounds at the G League Combine.
- The scalability of his offensive role is a real question mark, since he isn’t likely to be utilized as a creator, is a low percentage finisher (53% at the rim), and will likely need to be a reliable floor-spacer and ball-mover.
