Lakers' LeBron James: Will miss season opener
James (sciatica) will miss the start of the 2025-26 regular season, Dan Woike of The Athletic reports.
James has been dealing with nerve irritation in his glute throughout training camp and now will miss time during the regular season. He will be reevaluated in three to four weeks, which means he'll miss at least the first five games of the regular season and potentially much more if the rehab process doesn't go well. Lakers newcomer Jake LaRavia may get a boost in minutes with James on the mend.

Lakers' Luka Doncic: Practicing fully at training camp
Head coach JJ Redick confirmed Thursday that Doncic (rest) was a full participant in practices last week, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reports.
Doncic is getting his reps in during scrimmages at training camp, but it remains possible that he'll be held out of preseason games after his EuroBasket run this past summer. The superstar guard's status remains murky for Sunday's exhibition contest against the Warriors, but Doncic's availability for Opening Night isn't in doubt.

Lakers' LeBron James: On his own timeline
Head coach JJ Redick said James (glute) is on his "own timeline" to return to the floor, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports.
James has yet to play a game during the preseason, and there's a good chance he won't suit up until the team's regular-season opener Oct. 21 against the Warriors. Redick appears to be leaving it up to James to determine when he wants to play.

Lakers' Marcus Smart: Practices fully Thursday
Smart (Achilles) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Daniel Starkand of LakersNation.com reports.
Smart has a chance to make his preseason debut with his new squad Sunday after practicing fully Thursday. He has been dealing with Achilles soreness and missed Wednesday's practice due to illness.

Lakers' Adou Thiero: Limited to individual work
Thiero (knee) is still not participating in live drills at practice, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reports.
Thiero remains limited to individual workouts due to a knee injury. The rookie forward is losing out on valuable reps at training camp, and he can be considered doubtful to make his preseason debut Sunday against the Warriors. Until Thiero is cleared for contact, the door remains open for Jake LaRavia and Dalton Knecht to nail down a reserve role in the Lakers' frontcourt.

Lakers' Marcus Smart: Dealing with illness
Smart (Achilles) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice due to flu-like symptoms, NBA reporter Jovan Buha reports.
Smart has yet to play a game during the preseason for his new squad while working his way through Achilles soreness. However, he did participate in practice Tuesday before missing Wednesday's session. As long as the illness isn't severe, he seems to be trending in the right direction, but his status for the remaining five games of the preseason is uncertain.

Lakers' Maxi Kleber: Does individual work Tuesday
Kleber (quadriceps) did some individual work Tuesday, Mark Medina of TheSportingTribune.com reports.
Kleber is continuing his recovery from a quadriceps injury that he suffered in practice last Tuesday. The veteran big man can be labeled questionable for Sunday's preseason game against the Warriors. Jaxson Hayes and Jarred Vanderbilt will remain candidates for an increased role until Kleber is cleared for action.

Lakers' LeBron James: Goes through individual work
James (glute) went through individual work during Tuesday's practice, Mark Medina of TheSportingTribune.com reports.
James has been dealing with a nerve irritation in his glute, which has kept him sidelined for the first two preseason games for his squad. It remains uncertain whether he'll suit up for any of the remaining five preseason games, starting with Sunday's matchup with the Warriors.

Lakers' Luka Doncic: Goes through individual work
Doncic (rest) completed an individual workout Tuesday, Mark Medina of TheSportingTribune.com reports.
Doncic's status remains uncertain for Sunday's preseason game against the Warriors. It's possible the superstar guard won't see much exhibition action after participating in EuroBasket play this past summer. Gabe Vincent would be an option to soak up extra minutes if Doncic is out Sunday.

Lakers' Marcus Smart: Practices Tuesday
Smart (Achilles) participated in practice Tuesday, Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet reports.
Smart missed the first two preseason games with his new squad while dealing with Achilles tendinopathy. The veteran guard appears to be trending in the right direction, making it possible that he suits up for the team's next preseason game against the Warriors on Sunday.

Lakers' Gabe Vincent: Drops team-high 16 points
Vincent scored 16 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 5-5 FT), adding five assists in 19 minutes during Sunday's 111-103 preseason loss to the Warriors.
Vincent made his preseason debut after missing the opening game against the Suns, moving into the starting lineup alongside Jake LaRavia. With both LeBron James (pinched nerve) and Luka Doncic (rest) still sidelined, Los Angeles has been able to mix up its rotation, getting a good look at some projected role players such as Vincent. While this was an encouraging performance, Vincent has more competition for minutes this season. He will likely battle for minutes against the likes of LaRavia, Marcus Smart and Nick Smith.

Lakers' Jarred Vanderbilt: Strong two-way performance in loss
Vanderbilt compiled nine points (4-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in 21 minutes during Sunday's 111-103 preseason loss to Golden State.
Vanderbilt remained in the starting lineup, a position he could very well find himself in come Opening Night. He brings a defensive presence to a team desperately in need of an identity on that end of the court. After having dealt with multiple injuries over the past couple of years, the hope is that Vanderbilt can stay healthy, allowing him to build some much-needed momentum. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, look for Vanderbilt to play minutes in the low to mid-20s on most nights.

Lakers' Deandre Ayton: Passive again in preseason loss
Ayton managed seven points (3-8 FG, 1-2 FT), seven rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes during Sunday's 111-103 preseason loss to the Warriors.
Ayton struggled on the offensive end once again Sunday, scoring an inefficient seven points. Following a one-point performance in his debut for the Lakers on Friday, the hope was that Ayton would be more of a factor, especially against a team like the Warriors. Both LeBron James (pinched nerve) and Luka Doncic (rest) were sidelined once again, hypothetically pushing Ayton up in the offensive pecking order. While it is a very small sample size, Ayton will need to be more involved come Opening Night, should the Lakers hope to challenge in what promises to be a highly competitive Western Conference.
