Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Has key role in rookie campaign
Newton finished the 2024 regular season with 44 tackles (19 solo), including 2.0 sacks, along with a defensed pass, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble over 16 games.
After being taken in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Newton missed Washington's regular-season opener due to a foot injury. He was ready to play the following week, however, and gradually worked his way up to a significant role -- Newton started each of the Commanders' regular-season contests from Week 7 onward, though he came off the bench and logged lesser defensive snap counts during the playoffs. Newton appears to be a key part of the team's plans moving forward and will look to further develop in 2025 during his second NFL campaign.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Shows out in Week 16
Newton recorded six total tackles (five solo), including 1.0 sacks and an additional two tackles for loss, in Sunday's 36-33 win over the Eagles.
Newton, a 2024 second-round pick from Illinois, appears to be finding his groove in the NFL, as he tallied career highs in total tackles (six) and tackles for loss (three) in Sunday's win. The rookie defensive lineman has been inconsistent throughout the year, recording 38 total tackles, including 2.0 sacks, and one forced fumble across 14 appearances. Newton appears to be improving as the season progresses, and his next opportunity to take the field will come in Week 17 when the Commanders face the Falcons.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Will play Monday
Newton (foot) was limited in Saturday's practice but does not carry an injury designation into Monday's game against Cincinnati.
Newton made his NFL debut in Week 2 against the Giants, during which he played 12 snaps on defense and did not record a tackle. He opened the week as a DNP on Thursday due to a lingering foot injury, and despite being limited Friday and Saturday, he is good to go for Monday's contest. Newton will provide depth at defensive tackle behind starters Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Set to make NFL debut
Newton (foot) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Newton fell in the 2024 NFL Draft due to injury concerns and missed Washington's season-opening loss to Tampa Bay due to a foot injury. However, the Illinois product logged a pair of limited sessions to cap Week 2 prep and is slated to make his NFL debut. Despite being active, the rookie's role is expected to be limited. With Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen leading the way, Newton will compete with Phidarian Mathis and Carlos Watkins for backup DT snaps.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Could make NFL debut Sunday
Newton (foot) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Giants, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Newton managed two straight limited practice sessions Thursday and Friday, which could be a positive sign for his availability Sunday. If the 2023 second-round pick remains sidelined for a second consecutive game with a foot injury Week 2, expect Phidarian Mathis would likely serve as the top backup defensive tackle behind starters Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Manages to practice Thursday
Newton (foot) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
Newton opened the week as a DNP on Wednesday, but the rookie second-rounder was at least able to see the field Thursday. He underwent surgery in January to repair a partial Jones fracture in his foot, which kept him out of OTAs, minicamp and most of training camp. Friday's injury report will provide more clarity on whether Newton will make his NFL debut against the Giants on Sunday.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Misses Wednesday's practice
Newton (foot) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice.
The 2024 second-round pick was thought to possibly make his NFL debut Sunday after missing Washington's Week 1 loss due to a foot issue, but missing Wednesday's practice seems to be a step in the wrong direction. If Newton is unable to practice throughout the week, expect Phidarian Mathis to see more work as the Commanders' top rotational interior defensive lineman.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: In contention to make debut Week 2
Coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday that the Commanders "may" have Newton (foot) available for Sunday's contest against the Giants, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Newton missed Week 1 due to a foot injury, but it sounds like the rookie second-round pick's regular-season debut could come during Sunday's divisional matchup. Quinn said Newton is "trending in the right way," and that Washington will have more information on his status Friday.

Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: Out Sunday
Newton (foot) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
The 2024 second-round pick was listed as doubtful Friday after missing practice Thursday. Newton fell in the draft due to injury concerns. Phidarian Mathis should replace him as the Commanders' top rotational defensive tackle.
