NFL Rookies Competing for Starting Roles: Bhayshul Tuten for Jaguars RB1

Top Tank Bigsby News

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: First RB into second preseason game

Bigsby rushed twice for six yards and caught his only target for 19 yards in Sunday's 17-17 preseason tie against the Saints.

It was encouraging to see Bigsby contribute as a pass catcher considering he had only seven catches last season compared to Travis Etienne's 39. Bigsby played the opening drive Sunday, which culminated in a botched handoff that was credited as a Trevor Lawrence fumble, while Etienne accumulated 32 yards on four touches on the team's second possession before the starters were removed from the game. They seem headed for a backfield split come the regular season and are currently running ahead of rookie fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten, who scored a second-quarter touchdown with the backups. Jacksonville's final preseason game will be Saturday against the Dolphins.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Plays behind Etienne

Bigsby rushed the ball six times for 24 yards in Saturday's 31-25 preseason loss to the Steelers. He did not catch his only target.

Bigsby had fine production on his limited opportunity, but his usage was the far bigger story. All of Jacksonville's starting skill-position players were on the field for the first drive, and Bigsby did not see any snaps on that possession. While that usage isn't guaranteed to continue into the regular season, it doesn't appear that Bigsby is challenging Travis Etienne for the lead role out of the backfield at this point.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Rotating with Etienne

Travis Etienne seemed to be the feature back during Tuesday's practice, after Bigsby got more work with the starters last week, John Shipley of SI.com reports.

Even though Etienne got more work, Bigsby performed well Tuesday, reaching the second level on multiple runs. The big takeaway is that both running backs are playing a lot of first-team snaps, while rookie fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten has been limited by a minor hamstring injury. Snaps and touches are up for grabs under new coach Liam Coen, who oversaw a dramatic transformation of Tampa Bay's running game last year.
