Top Xavier Gipson News

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Still managing shoulder issue

Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that Gipson did not play in Friday's preseason game against the Eagles due to a lingering shoulder injury, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.

Gipson suffered a shoulder injury during the Jets' second preseason game against the Giants, and that injury lingered throughout the week enough for him to miss the preseason finale. Gipson's path to the 53-man roster is as a returner, but the severity of the injury could factor into whether he's on the Jets' roster for Week 1 against the Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 7.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Questionable to return Saturday

Gipson (shoulder) is questionable to return to Saturday's preseason game against the Giants.

Gipson has been dealing with a shoulder issue for two weeks but suited up to play Saturday. However, he exited early and went to the locker room after returning one kickoff for 23 yards.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Slated to play vs. Giants

Gipson (shoulder) is in line to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Gipson has been cleared to play in Saturday's exhibition game after working through a shoulder injury for the past two weeks. The third-year wideout is competing for a spot on the Jets' 53-man roster as a returner and in a depth role at wide receiver.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Sidelined at least a week

Gipson (shoulder) won't practice this week heading into Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Gipson hurt his shoulder Saturday and will miss at least a week of practice as a result, putting his availability for the Jets' first preseason game in doubt. Undrafted rookie Jamaal Pritchett brings a similar skill set to Gipson as a return man on special teams and occasional contributor at wide receiver on offense, so Pritchett could see the biggest uptick in opportunities during Gipson's absence.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Injures shoulder Saturday

Gipson left Saturday's training camp practice after injuring his shoulder, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.

Gipson suffered the injury during red-zone team drills and left for the team's facilities shortly after. He'll undergo further testing to determine the severity of the injury, but it puts him in jeopardy of missing practices and the Jets' preseason opener against the Packers on Aug. 9. Gipson's path to the 53-man roster is in the form of return duties, so Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu would be in line to see more opportunities on kickoffs and punts were Gipson to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Regresses in second NFL season

Gipson finished the 2024 season with six catches for 39 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets. He also rushed once for five yards, in addition to returning 33 punts for 266 yards and 17 kickoffs for 489 yards.

Gipson was a non-factor on offense and saw declines in both punt-return and kickoff-return yards compared to his rookie year despite leading the league in punts returned in 2024. The 23-year-old out of Stephen F. Austin has a decent chance of making the team in 2025 thanks to his special-teams contributions, though Gipson will likely face competition in training camp.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: No touches on offense again

Gipson returned one kickoff for 25 yards and added two punt returns for 25 yards in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills.

Gipson played nine snaps on offense but didn't touch the ball. He has gone four games without a target or carry, and the second-year pro's only multi-catch performance of the season came back in Week 3. Gipson's a fantasy non-factor heading into the season finale against the Dolphins, outside of formats that reward return yards.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Game-ending fumble in loss

Gipson returned three kickoffs for 99 yards and had one punt return for no gain in Sunday's 19-9 loss to the Rams. He didn't record a target or carry and lost a fumble.

Gipson contributed a 42-yard kickoff return to provide some special-teams value despite a lack of involvement on offense. That contribution was overshadowed by his muffed punt in the fourth quarter, which was a microcosm of the Jets' season. New York had just gotten a stop with 1:44 remaining but burned all three timeouts in the process. Instead of the offense having a chance to at least make it a one-possession game and hope for an onside kick, Gipson's fumble allowed the Rams to retain possession and kneel out the clock.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Cedes slot job to Corley

Gipson caught his only target for minus-1 yard in Sunday's 26-21 loss to the Seahawks. He also returned two kickoffs for 81 yards and added a punt return for no gain.

Gipson played just 19 snaps on offense compared to Malachi Corley's 41, suggesting that Corley has surpassed Gipson as the Jets' preferred option in the slot. While Gipson remained involved as a return man on special teams, he also faces increased competition for that role, as Kene Nwangwu logged three kickoff returns in his Jets debut Sunday, one of which went for a 99-yard touchdown.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: One catch in loss to Colts

Gipson caught his only target for 17 yards and netted 19 yards on three punt returns in Sunday's 28-27 loss to the Colts.

Gipson was on the field for 27 of 51 snaps on offense while Malachi Corley played 12, so Gipson continues to be the preferred option in the slot. The second-year pro has just five catches for 40 yards in that role all season. Gipson also contributes regularly as a return man, though Isaiah Davis was the only player to log a kickoff return for the Jets against the Colts.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Goes catch-less in Week 10

Gipson didn't catch his lone target in Sunday's 31-6 loss to the Cardinals.

Gipson remained quiet on offense despite ranking third among Jets wide receivers with a 41 percent snap share. He usually chips in some return yardage on special teams, but the Jets didn't register a kickoff return or punt return in the lopsided loss, as it was a lethargic effort in all three phases of the game.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Could emerge as No. 3 receiver

Gipson is expected to serve as the Jets' No. 3 receiver beginning with Sunday's game at Arizona after New York traded Mike Williams to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

While the departure of Williams will open up some snaps at receiver, Gipson likely won't serve as an every-down player like Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams. The Jets are expected to make heavy use of two tight ends sets featuring Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert that would leave Gipson on the sideline, and 2024 third-round pick Malachi Corley could also be in the mix on three-wide sets. Gipson will continue to offer his most utility in fantasy leagues that count return yardage, as he seems locked in as the Jets' top kickoff and punt returner.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Catches short TD in Week 8

Gipson caught his only target for a one-yard touchdown in Sunday's 25-22 loss to the Patriots.

Gipson made the most of his first target since Week 4, securing a tough catch on a low throw right at the goal line, which was upheld as a touchdown upon review. His contributions as a slot receiver come second to Gipson's special teams exploits. The second-year pro had 71 yards on four punt returns.

  • Jets' Xavier Gipson: Two fumbles go out of bounds

Gispon had two kickoff returns for 51 yards and two punt returns for four yards but wasn't targeted on offense in Sunday's 37-15 loss to the Steelers.

Gipson was on the field for only one play on offense, as he remains a non-factor in a receiving corps that now includes Davante Adams. The return man dropped the ball twice on punt returns, but both fumbles went out of bounds. Gipson's a dangerous return man, but he'll need to get the ball-security issues under control lest his special-teams role shrinks as well.
