Matthew Wright: Waived by Texans
The Texans have waived Wright.
Wright connected on all four of his field-goal attempts and both of his extra-point tries over the Texans' last two games while filling in for Ka'imi Fairbairn. After being listed as a full practice participant in Wednesday's walk-through, however, Fairbairn doesn't carry an injury designation for Thursday night's game against the Bills, a context that has prompted Houston to let Wright go.

Texans' Matthew Wright: Plays hero in Week 11
Wright went 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and made his only PAT in Sunday's 16-13 win over the Titans.
Wright made a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter before later adding a 43-yard make with 11:59 left in the fourth. He was then tasked with attempting a potential game-winning kick from 35 yards as time expired in regulation, nailing the kick for his third make of the day. Wright has now gone 4-for-4 on field-goal tries while making two starts with the Texans in place of Ka'imi Fairbairn (quadriceps), and he could draw another start against the Bills on Thursday Night Football in Week 12.

Houston signed Wright to the active roster after Fairbairn suffered his quad injury Week 9, signaling that the team anticipated needing a multi-game fill-in. In his team debut versus the Jaguars in Week 10, Wright converted his only field-goal attempt and his lone extra-point try. He'll work to remain accurate on the road against Tennessee.

The Texans signed Wright from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
The move means Wright will serve as the Texans' starting placekicker against the Jaguars on Sunday due to the absence of Ka'imi Fairbairn (quadriceps). Wright has appeared in two regular-season games in 2025 between the Titans and Commanders, and he has connected on 87.5 percent of his field goals on 64 attempts during his six-year NFL career. Wilson goes as far to say that Fairbairn, who leads NFL kickers with 25 field-goal attempts, has been ruled out Week 10, but the Texans have not yet confirmed that. If he replaces Fairbairn, Wright steps into a friendly situation for a kicker, as Houston's offense ranks last in the NFL in converting red-zone appearances into touchdowns.

Wright was elevated from the practice squad to handle kicking duties for the Commanders in Monday's 28-7 loss to Kansas City. Though he connected on his only kick of the game -- an extra-point try late in the second quarter -- Wright will end up parting ways with the organization one day later. The release likely signals that Matt Gay (back) will be ready to serve as the Commanders' placekicker in their Week 9 matchup with the Seahawks.

Washington signed Wright to the practice squad Monday and elevated him to the active roster to handle placekicking duties in place of Matt Gay (back) versus the Chiefs.
Wright, who made a start for the Titans in Week 6 but was then cut from Tennessee's practice squad on Oct. 17, now will hold down the fort at kicker for the Commanders for at least one game. He was perfect in limited action for the Titans, converting his only field-goal try and his lone extra-point attempt.
