49ers' Matt Gay: Joins 49ers' practice squad
The 49ers signed Gay to the practice squad Wednesday.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday that Eddy Pineiro was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain following Sunday's win at Arizona and is considered "week-to-week," per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. The 49ers subsequently tried out five kickers between Tuesday and Wednesday before deciding to roll the dice with Gay, who was waived by the Commanders on Monday. Gay thus will be elevated from the practice squad to handle kicking duties Monday against the Panthers if Pineiro sits out the contest.

49ers' Matt Gay: Signing with San Francisco
Gay is signing with the 49ers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The Commanders waived Gay on Monday after he missed two field-goal attempts in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Dolphins. He made just 13 of 19 attempts for Washington this season, but he was at least perfect on PATs, and he apparently impressed the 49ers during a workout this week. With Eddy Pineiro nursing a hamstring injury, Gay may end up kicking for San Francisco this Sunday against the Panthers.

Gay will head to waivers since the trade deadline has passed, but he's had a dreadful season in Washington after signing a one-year deal with the team over the offseason. Gay went 2-for-4 on field-goal attempts and made his lone extra-point try during the Commanders' 16-13 overtime loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
Both of Gay's misses came from 51 and 56 yards in the second and fourth quarters, respectively, but they turned out to be crucial misses in what was a close affair in Madrid, Spain. It was the second time this season that the veteran kicker missed two field goals in a game, and he is now 4-for-9 on field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards. Gay is now 13-for-19 on field-goal attempts and 22-for-22 on extra-point tries through 10 regular-season games.

Gay didn't practice last Saturday due to a back injury and then was ruled out ahead of Monday's eventual loss at Kansas City. Matthew Wright filled in for Gay and connected on his only kick (a PAT), but the former reverted to the practice squad Tuesday and was promptly cut, signaling that Gay was set to return to action Week 9. After progressing from no activity Wednesday to limited Thursday and then full Friday, Gay has done just that and will resume placekicking duties for the Commanders on Sunday.

Gay was a late scratch for Washington's loss to the Chiefs on Monday, which prompted the team to sign Matthew Wright to the practice squad and elevate him for game day. Wright did not attempt a field goal and made his only extra-point try during the loss to Kansas City, and he'll stand to be elevated again versus the Seahawks on Sunday if Gay isn't able to return to full health in time to play Week 9.

Commanders' Matt Gay: Perfect in win
Gay hit both field-goal attempts and all three extra-point tries in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Chargers.
The kicker's longest field-goal in the game was just 36 yards, but he was reliable and has been the last two weeks after missing three field goals total in Weeks 2 and 3. Gay has not yet missed an extra point, going 13-for-13, in 2025. With Jayden Daniels back under center for the Commanders, Gay should get plenty of scoring opportunities.
