Vikings' Cam Akers: Back to practice squad
Akers reverted to the Vikings' practice squad Monday.
Akers played just one offensive snap during the Vikings' 21-17 win over the Browns on Sunday, but he made the most of that opportunity by throwing a 32-yard pass to Josh Oliver on a trick play in which the sixth-year running back was used as a wildcat quarterback. Akers has already been elevated to Minnesota's active roster three times, which is the maximum allowed for a season. He would have to be signed to the active roster in order to play for the Vikings for the rest of the season.

Vikings' Cam Akers: Throws TD pass
Akers threw a 32-yard touchdown pass on his only snap on offense while being used as a wildcat quarterback in Sunday's win over Cleveland in London.
Akers threw a perfect pass to Josh Oliver on a trick play. Akers was a successful high school quarterback and threw several halfback passes in college. The Vikings elevated Akers from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's game versus the Browns.
Akers will serve as the team's No. 3 running back for the third straight week behind Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott, with Aaron Jones (hamstring) still on injured reserve. This is the final time Minnesota will be able to elevate Akers, and going forward the team will have to sign him to the active roster in order for him to appear in another game.

Akers was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster the day before the game to serve as the No. 3 running back. Last week, he got five carries just days after he was signed as a free agent, which suggested he could perhaps challenge Zavier Scott for the backup running back role while Aaron Jones (hamstring) is sidelined. However, Scott played 29 snaps on offense and had two carries and six receptions (one for a touchdown) in Dublin, showing he's clearly ahead of Akers on the depth chart.

With Aaron Jones (hamstring) on injured reserve, Akers made his season debut last Sunday against the Bengals as a practice-squad elevation, ranking third in snap share (12 percent) behind Jordan Mason (60 percent) and Zavier Scott (28 percent). All of Akers' five carries (for 19 yards) occurred in garbage time during the 48-10 win, so if the Week 4 matchup with Pittsburgh is a close one, he may not see the field outside of giving Mason and Scott a breather, barring injuries.

Akers had five carries for 19 yards a did not have a reception on his only target in Sunday's win over the Bengals.
Akers was elevated to the active roster just five days after he was signed as a free agent. Zavier Scott got more work as Jordan Mason's backup with Aaron Jones (hamstring) sidelined, and Akers only got his action (seven snaps on offense) late in the fourth quarter. However, Akers getting snaps, even in a blowout, so quickly after he was signed shows he could be in the mix to be the primary backup as early as Week 4 against Pittsburgh.

Akers presumably will be a part of the Vikings' plans in the backfield without the services of Aaron Jones (hamstring), who will be on injured reserve for at least the next four contests. Jordan Mason is expected to lead the way for Minnesota, but Akers' experience in coach Kevin O'Connell's system suggests he's likely to see at least some touches in his season debut, especially because his only competition for those reps is undrafted rookie Zavier Scott. Akers agreed to a contract with the Vikings' practice squad Tuesday, Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Though Akers will begin his third stint in the Vikings organization as a member of the practice squad, he could be elevated to the 53-man roster for Sunday's game versus the Bengals due to Aaron Jones (hamstring) looking unlikely to play Week 3. Akers was most recently with the Saints during the preseason, but he was unable to win a roster spot after New Orleans opted to enter the regular season with Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and Devin Neal as its backfield options. In 2024, Akers saw action in 17 games between stops with the Texans and Vikings during the regular season, carrying 104 times for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two touchdowns while adding 14 receptions for 68 yards and three more scores.

Saints' Cam Akers: Third RB to see touches Sunday
Akers had four carries for nine yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler wound up leading the Saints in rushing with just 22 yards Sunday, highlighting how poorly the entire backfield performed. It's worth noting that Akers was the third back to touch the ball after spot starter Kendre Miller and Velus Jones. The 26-year-old Akers will have to show the coaching staff more in the Saints' final two exhibition contests if he wants to earn a spot on the 53-man roster this coming season.
