Texans' Irv Smith: Leads receivers Saturday
Smith caught all five targets for a team-high 46 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Carolina.
Smith wasn't in the starting lineup, and none of his activity came during the first quarter, when Houston's offensive stars were primarily involved. Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover opened the game at tight end, before Smith showed off his hands. That he was featured heavily in the second and third quarters was a direct result of two significant injuries that cropped up during the week of preparation for Saturday's contest. Both Brevin Jordan (knee) and Dalton Keene (leg) sustained season-ending injuries, which benefitted Smith. A once promising tight end early in his career with the Vikings, Smith is poised to be third on the depth chart for a newly constructed offense that is expected to use multiple tight end sets.

Texans' Irv Smith: Returns to practice
Smith (hand) returned to practice Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
Smith, who missed two days of practice this week, got healthy just in time for Saturday's preseason tilt against Carolina. It's a good time for him to be healthy, as the Texans lost a pair of tight ends this week to season-ending injuries -- Brevin Jordan (knee) and Dalton Keene (leg).

Smith didn't play in the Texans' preseason opener against the Vikings this past Saturday. With Brevin Jordan (knee) suddenly done for the year, there's a spot open in Houston's tight end room behind Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover. Smith is competing with Luke Lachey and Dalton Keene.

Texans' Irv Smith: Returning to Houston
The Texans signed Smith to a one-year contract Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Smith hooked on with Houston's practice squad last September and ended up getting signed to the team's active roster in December. The veteran tight end played in five total regular-season games and didn't see a target on offense, though he did catch one pass for two yards in the Texans' playoff loss to Kansas City. Smith figures to again be buried on Houston's depth chart when the team's tight-end corps is healthy, though Brevin Jordan is recovering from a torn ACL and Cade Stover fractured his collarbone in the team's wild-card win against the Chargers in January.

Smith caught his lone target for two yards in Saturday's 23-14 divisional-round playoff loss to the Chiefs.
Smith moved up the depth chart after Houston placed Cade Stover (collarbone) on injured reserve. Smith was a late-season addition to the active roster, as the Texans dealt with long-term and ephemeral injuries at the position, and was never targeted during the regular season. He enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

Smith was on the active roster and worked as the third tight end as Teagan Quitoriano (calf) was held out of the opening round of the playoffs. The latter was designated to return last week and could replace Smith for this weekend's divisional-round matchup against Kansas City. After being released from the Chiefs' practice squad in September, Smith was scooped up by Houston and eventually elevated to its 53-man roster. Smith disappointed in 2023, as he wasn't able to take hold of the top spot on Cincinnati's depth chart at tight end and finished with just 18 catches for 115 yards and one touchdown across 12 games. He seems to be making a good first impression in Kansas City, as he's proving to be a reliable target in practices on the occasions he's filled in for Travis Kelce on the first-team offense. He's got a real chance to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster and is likely competing with Noah Gray and Jared Wiley for a depth role in the team's tight end room.
