Richie Grant: Let go by Niners
The 49ers released Grant (knee) on Thursday.
The lack of an injury designation indicates Grant is past a knee issue that kept him sidelined for all three of the 49ers' preseason games. The 2021 second-rounder will look to catch on with a team in need of depth at special teams and in the secondary. Grant finished the 2024 regular season with 14 tackles (13 solo) and two pass defenses across 17 games as a member of the Falcons.

49ers' Richie Grant: Won't play vs. Las Vegas
Grant (knee) will not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Raiders, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Grant is working through a knee injury, which will cause him to miss a second straight preseason game. The 2021 second-rounder is battling for a roster spot in a depth role at safety, and he'll aim for returning to practice next week and being available for the 49ers' preseason finale against the Chargers on Saturday, Aug. 23.

49ers' Richie Grant: To miss roughly a week
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Saturday that Grant (knee) did not suit up for the team's 30-9 preseason loss to Denver due to an injury and is expected to miss roughly one week, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Grant's status may also be uncertain for the 49ers' next preseason tilt on Saturday, Aug. 16 versus the Raiders. Health permitting, he projects to enter the regular season handling a depth role at safety and contributing on special teams.

49ers' Richie Grant: Heading out to San Fran
The 49ers will sign Grant to a one-year contract, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Grant played the majority of his snaps on special teams in 2024, occasionally rotating in at safety for the Falcons behind Jessie Bates and Justin Simmons. His competition for snaps at safety in San Francisco doesn't seem to be quite as formidable on paper, so he could be in line for an uptick in playing time on defense in 2025.

Falcons' Richie Grant: Likely starting Sunday
Grant will start if Justin Simmons (hamstring), who is listed as doubtful, can't play in Sunday's matchup against the Buccaneers, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Grant has played just 18 defensive snaps and recorded four total tackles and one pass defended through the Falcons' first seven games. If Simmons is sidelined as expected in Week 8, expect Grant to start opposite Jessie Bates as part of the Falcons' top safety duo.

Falcons' Richie Grant: Working with starters
Grant is working with the starters to begin training camp, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Grant was productive in 2023, recording 100-plus tackles for a second straight season. However, he struggled to cover tight ends and lost snaps to DeMarcco Hellams to end the campaign. With HC Raheem Morris establishing a new defensive scheme, Grant is getting another chance to solidify himself as the starter. However, it's still early in the offseason, so things are subject to change.

Falcons' Richie Grant: Strong 2023 campaign
Grant (neck) finished 2023 with 103 tackles (37 solo), six pass defenses, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception in 17 appearances.
Grant, a 2021 second-round pick, was a regular starter for a second straight season and has recorded back-to-back 100-tackle campaigns. In 2023, Grant notched his first three sacks of his career and recorded his third interception over the last two seasons. He lost some snaps over the final couple of weeks to DeMarcco Hellams but appeared in all 17 games and finished strong with a 10-tackle performance, including a sack, in Week 18. The addition of Jessie Bates didn't negatively impact Grant's production, and the duo figures to be back in 2024, though Grant is entering the final year of his rookie deal and may have to fend off Hellams for playing time.
