  • Jarryd Hayne: Retires from NFL

Hayne announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday, CSN Bay Area reports.

Hayne's brief NFL career has come to an end. He was asked to join the Fiji Rugby Sevens for the upcoming Olympic games, and it was an opportunity he could not pass up. While he never was a big contributor, Hayne can say that he suited up for an NFL team despite having little to no experience playing the sport. That is no easy task.

  • 49ers' Jarryd Hayne: After stellar preseason, fails to produce

Hayne saw limited action in 2015, gaining 79 yards on 23 touches.

The former rugby league star burst onto the scene with a stellar preseason in which he gained 175 yards (7.0 YPC) while exhibiting his skills as a return man. The glow wore off quickly as Hayne was not able to replicate his success as a return man and was eventually waived and placed on the practice squad due to fumbling issues (three fumbles, one lost in six games games). He was eventually brought back up, where he gained 27 yards on nine carries. While this season didn't turn out to be a success story for Hayne, he will definitely be a project in the offseason, and could see touches in 2017 if he shows improvement.

  • 49ers' Jarryd Hayne: Totals 47 yards against the Lions

Hayne rushed for 27 yards on nine carries and added 20 yards receiving on five catches in Sunday's loss to Detroit.

Hayne saw his most sizable offensive role of the season on Sunday, recording 14 touches - besting his previous season high of five. Hayne didn't see the kind of success that DuJuan Harris saw on the ground, but surprised by recording the second most targets of the game with six. That sort of role can be short-lived in San Francisco, however, just ask fellow back Kendall Gaskins. Gaskins was targeted seven times last week against the Bengals, but didn't see a pass come his way against the Lions.

  • Jarryd Hayne: Added to active roster

Hayne was promoted to the active roster from the 49ers practice squad Saturday.

The 49ers placed guard Alex Boone on injured reserve Saturday, which opened a spot on the active roster for the versatile Hayne. He has been on the 49ers practice squad since re-signing with the team in November, and now that Shaun Draughn has been ruled out for Sunday, Hayne could provide some depth in the run game behind Kendall Gaskins and DuJuan Harris in addition to potentially serving as a returner.

  • Jarryd Hayne: Signed to 49ers practice squad

The 49ers signed Hayne to their practice squad Monday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.

After Hayne emerged from waivers unclaimed, he returns to provide depth to a injury-plagued running back corps. Among those afflicted are Reggie Bush (torn MCL), Carlos Hyde (stress fracture in his foot), and Mike Davis (broken hand). In the short term, the 49ers may have to employ Kendall Gaskins and Shaun Draughn out of the backfield, though Hayne is laying in wait in case of emergency.

  • Jarryd Hayne: Headed back to 49ers?

After going unclaimed on waivers, Hayne appears on track to rejoin the 49ers, CSN Bay Area reports.

Whether Hayne is added to the team's practice squad or 53-man roster, the 49ers need to add backfield depth in short order after Reggie Bush sustained a potentially season-ending knee injury Sunday against the Rams, while Mike Davis sustained a fractured hand in the contest.

  • 49ers' Jarryd Hayne: Waived Saturday

Hayne was waived by the 49ers on Saturday, the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports.

He was inactive for the 49ers last game, so there are no major fantasy implications here. Kendall Gaskins was promoted from the practice squad as a corresponding move.

  • 49ers' Jarryd Hayne: Inactive for Thursday's game

Hayne is inactive for Thursday's game against the Seahawks, CSN Bay Area reports.

With Reggie Bush (calf) making his return, Hayne probably wasn't going to have a role on offense. The former rugby league player was still expected to return punts, but after fumbling in Sunday's win over the Ravens, Hayne has seemingly lost the role to Bruce Ellington for at least one game.
