  • Lions' Kyle Allen: Wins backup job in Detroit

Allen is in line to begin the 2025 regular season as the Lions' No. 2 quarterback, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Allen was in a battle with Hendon Hooker for the No. 2 slot at quarterback behind Jared Goff in Detroit, and Allen ultimately won out when Hooker was cut Monday. In Allen's last regular-season start back in 2022 with Houston, he completed 20 of 39 pass attempts for 201 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, adding two rushes for one yard.

  • Lions' Kyle Allen: Perfect in preseason finale

Allen completed all five of his passes for 66 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 26-7 preseason loss to the Texans.

The 29-year-old QB may have locked up the No. 2 job for the Lions with this performance. Allen got the start and while he took a sack to end Detroit's first possession, he was laser-focused on the second, ending the drive with a 33-yard TD pass to Isaac TeSlaa. Hendon Hooker, meanwhile, went 6-for-11 for 70 yards and an INT after taking over from Allen. Jared Goff is locked into the starting role for the Lions, but Allen appears to be the next man up should anything happen to him.

  • Lions' Kyle Allen: Tosses two TDs in preseason loss

Allen completed 14 of 17 pass attempts for 124 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 24-17 preseason loss to the Dolphins.

Allen has now impressed in back-to-back preseason appearances, combining for 244 passing yards and four touchdowns in those contests, without an interception. While Allen has outplayed fellow reserve quarterback Hendon Hooker thus far throughout the preseason, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the backup competition behind Jared Goff remains open. Lions coach Dan Campbell said Hooker may get the start during Detroit's preseason finale against the Texans next Saturday, but both signal-callers figure to get substantial reps.

  • Lions' Kyle Allen: Perfect passer rating Friday

Allen completed seven of eight pass attempts for 120 yards and two touchdowns while taking two carries for 10 yards in Friday's preseason tilt in Atlanta.

Allen entered the contest with a little over five minutes left in the first half and proceeded to orchestrate three consecutive scoring drives. two of which resulted in touchdowns. Fellow backup Hendon Hooker started Friday's exhibition and produced little offensively while turning the ball over twice. Both signal-callers are vying to serve as Jared Goff's primary backup this upcoming season, with Allen having the clear early advantage based on performance and experience.

  • Lions' Kyle Allen: Pair of picks in preseason opener

Allen completed nine of 14 passes for 91 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions and rushed twice for five yards during the Lions' 34-7 preseason loss to the Chargers in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game.

Allen, who's competing with Hendon Hooker for the No. 2 role behind Jared Goff, got off to an auspicious start by throwing interceptions on the Lions' second and third possessions. Allen did bounce back to helm a 15-play, 60-yard drive that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Craig Reynolds, finishing his night on a high note. Allen played the entire first half before giving way to Hooker, and it's possible the division of labor is the same for Detroit's next preseason game on Friday night, Aug. 8 against the Falcons.

  • Lions' Kyle Allen: In battle for No. 2 role

Allen has seen work with both the second-team and third-team offensive units at Lions training camp, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Allen worked with the second-team offense to open training camp Sunday before Hendon Hooker replaced him with the second-team unit Monday. Allen signed with the Lions in the offseason, and he'll compete with Hooker for the backup quarterback role behind Jared Goff this season. The 29-year-old hasn't played in any meaningful action since 2022 with the Texans, when he completed 46 of 78 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing four interceptions, in two starts with the team. Hooker spent the majority of the 2024 campaign as Goff's primary backup and likely has the early edge over Allen for the No. 2 role.
