Raiders' Isaiah Crowell: Lands on injured reserve
The Raiders placed Crowell (Achilles) on injured reserve Friday, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
This news seemed inevitable after word surfaced that Crowell suffered a torn Achilles while working out Monday. The veteran tailback was considered an option to take over the starting role for the Raiders this season, though he was slated to face competition from first-round pick Josh Jacobs. The rookie should be viewed as the top candidate to start in the Raiders backfield sans Crowell, though the club also sports the likes of Jalen Richard, Doug Martin, DeAndre Washington and Chris Warren on the roster, and another veteran addition could be in the cards. Crowell, who was on a one-year contract, will aim to be healthy for the 2020 season either in Oakland or elsewhere.

Raiders' Isaiah Crowell: Tears Achilles during workout
Crowell suffered a torn Achilles while working out Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. He's scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery next week.
Viewed as a potential Marshawn Lynch replacement after inking a one-year deal with Oakland in March, Crowell saw any tenuous hold he might have had on the Raiders' top backfield job take a significant hit last week, when the team nabbed Alabama product Josh Jacobs in the first round of the draft. Crowell's injury now leaves Jacobs as the clear top candidate for carries, though the Raiders will likely add another veteran to their backfield before Week 1. The 26-year-old Crowell should at least have time to get healthy before the 2020 offseason, at which point he may need to find a new team as a free agent.

Raiders' Isaiah Crowell: Facing competition from rookie
Crowell is facing serious competition in the Oakland backfield after the team used the No. 24 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft on Josh Jacobs, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
Given his draft status and well-rounded skill set, Jacobs instantly becomes the favorite for the Week 1 start, while Jalen Richard remans the best bet to handle obvious passing situations. Crowell, on the other hand, may need to battle for a spot on the 53-man roster, as his one-year contract contains only $300,000 guaranteed, per overthecap.com. The 26-year-old had a career-high mark of 4.8 yards per carry last season with the Jets, but he did most of his damage in three games and was otherwise ineffective before a toe injury forced him to injured reserve Dec. 14. He does at least seem to be healthy for the offseason program, where he'll battle with DeAndre Washington, Chris Warren and a few other players for one or two roster spots.
