Top Mario Alford News

  • Mario Alford: Joins Chicago's practice squad

Alford signed a contract with the Bears' practice squad Monday.

Alford appeared in three games for the Browns in 2016, but he has been out of a job since Cleveland cut him following the preseason in September. The Bears have one of the shallower receiving groups in the NFL, so if Alford impresses during his initial practices with the team, it wouldn't be surprising if he earned a promotion to the 53-man roster over the final quarter of the season.

  • Mario Alford: Waived by Browns

Alford was waived by the Browns on Friday.

Alford made just one catch for 12 yards this preseason, as he was buried on the team's wide receiver depth chart. He had a shot to make the final roster as a return man on special teams, but he will now open the regular season on the free-agent market.

  • Browns' Mario Alford: Promoted to Browns active roster

Alford (ankle) was promoted to the Browns active roster Satuday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Since then, he was acquired by the Browns practice squad, and has now been promoted to their active roster. He figures to help out on special teams and provide depth at receiver for the team.

  • Bengals' Mario Alford: Waived with injury designation

Alford (ankle) was released by the Bengals on Tuesday, Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

A 2015 seventh-round selection, Alford spent the majority of his rookie year on the practice squad, and he was battling for one of the final roster spots prior to suffering an ankle injury at training camp. Released with an injury designation, he could land back on the Cincinnati practice squad or roster once he's healthy. With Brandon Tate also released Tuesday, everything points to undrafted rookie Alex Erickson making the final roster.
