49ers' Tavon Wilson: Won't return this season
Wilson (foot) won't play again this season after his 21-day window for reinstatement from injured reserve closed Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Wilson was designated to return from IR in early January but didn't demonstrate enough progress to earn a spot on the 49ers' postseason roster. He totaled 10 tackles in eight games this season and is set to be a free agent in 2022.

The transaction kicks off a 21-day window wherein Wilson can be evaluated at practice without counting against the active roster. The veteran appeared in eight games for the 49ers this season before hitting IR in mid-November.

Wilson split the first eight years of his career evenly between the Patriots and Lions before spending time with the Colts in 2020. The veteran now stands to bolster the 49ers' secondary depth, a role which will make him unlikely to pop up on the IDP radar unless starters in front of him go down.

Wilson signed with the Colts on Tuesday.
Wilson bounced in and out of the starting lineup in Detroit over the past four seasons, with his stint highlighted by last year's career-high 98 tackles. The 30-year-old could serve as the No. 3 safety in Indianapolis, where Malik Hooker and Khari Willis are expected to be the starters. The team also has rookie third-round pick Julian Blackmon, but he's still rehabbing from an ACL tear he suffered in December.

Lions' Tavon Wilson: Approaches triple-digit tackle numbers
Wilson generated 98 tackles, one sack, five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries over 16 games in 2019.
After seeing his role diminish during the 2018 campaign, Wilson logged a career high in defensive snaps this time around, presumably thanks to the offseason departure of Glover Quin followed by the midseason trade of Quan Diggs to Seattle. Wilson, who turns 30 in March, parlayed this heavy usage into a new career high in tackles and more than twice as many PBUs as he's had in any of the past six seasons. Whether this statistical growth can reasonably be expected to continue in 2020 largely depends on if Detroit extends another contract to the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent, and whether 2019 third-rounder Will Harris -- or any other younger bodies the Lions may bring in -- eat into Wilson's playing time.

Wilson was upgraded to a full participant for Friday's practice, signalling that he has a good chance to suit up in the finale. If Wilson should be ruled out, however, look for Will Harris to draw the start at the strong safety position for Week 17.
