Darian Thompson: Restored from COVID-19 list
The Cowboys restored Thompson to the practice squad from the practice squad COVID-19 list Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Thompson appeared in five games during the 2021 regular season, operating mostly on special teams and recording three solo tackles. It's unlikely he sees any playing time during the playoffs.

Thompson ended up on the practice squad injured list after hurting his hamstring in the Cowboys' Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers. The 2016 third-round selection now will try to earn back a spot on the active roster.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that Thompson "will miss some time" due to a hamstring injury, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Thompson was elevated from the practice squad ahead of Thursday's Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers, and he played 26 snaps on special teams. However, he apparently suffered a hamstring injury during the contest. McCarthy didn't offer a timetable for the safety's return, but he should tentatively be considered week-to-week.

Thompson appeared in 30 games over the last two seasons for the Cowboys, registering 88 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one interception. The addition of Malik Hooker this offseason made Thompson dispensable. He will likely garner attention from teams around the league in search of veteran depth for their secondary.

Thompson (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
The 27-year-old tested positive for the virus and missed the season finale, but he's now cleared the NFL's protocols. Thompson had 43 tackles (30 solo), one interception and one forced fumble in 15 games during 2020. He remains under contract for 2021, but his roster spot isn't secured since he could be cut by the team with only $100,000 in dead cap.

Cowboys' Darian Thompson: Has up-and-down campaign
Thompson (COVID-19) recorded 43 tackles (30 solo), one interception and one forced fumble over 15 games in 2020.
The 27-year-old safety started and ended the season with a starting role before missing Week 17 on the COVID-19 list, and he posted a couple of strong IDP efforts, including a 10-tackle performance Week 1. In between, however, Thompson's liabilities in coverage mostly relegated him to special teams. He has one more very affordable season remaining on his current contract, and the Cowboys are potentially facing a lot of turnover in their secondary already. However, new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn might decide to clean house as much as possible and send Thompson packing regardless of other moves.

Cowboys' Darian Thompson: Tests positive for COVID-19
Thompson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after testing positive for the virus, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Thompson won't play in Sunday's game against the Giants. The Cowboys will miss the playoffs with a loss or a Washington win. Depending on when Thompson tested positive, he may not be cleared in time for the first round of the playoffs. If Xavier Woods (ribs) is also unable to play, Reggie Robinson likely will start at safety in Week 17.

Cowboys' Darian Thompson: Picks off Lamar in loss
Thompson recorded seven tackles (five solo) and an interception in Tuesday's 34-17 loss to the Ravens.
Thompson's second career interception came on a pass that bounced off the outstretched hand of receiver Marquise Brown and right into the safety's waiting arms. His seven tackles were also the most Thompson has totaled since Week 1 against the Rams, as he failed to register more than four in any of the games in between.

Thompson recorded 10 tackles (nine solo) in Sunday's loss to the Rams.
Between an early exit for Leighton Vander Esch (collarbone) and a Sean McVay game plan that called for a lot of runs and quick passes to neutralize the Cowboys' pass rush, both the team's safeties were very busy -- Xavier Woods also racked up nine tackles. Thompson could remain an IDP asset at least until Vander Esch returns to action, especially if other teams copy what the Rams did offensively in Week 1.

Cowboys' Darian Thompson: In line for starting job
Thompson could be the Week 1 starter at safety opposite Xavier Woods (groin) following the release of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on Thursday, Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Of course, the team could bring in a veteran to fill that role, and the release of Clinton-Dix prompted a new round of speculation regarding the team's interest in Earl Thomas. "We're certainly going to look at all avenues as we move forward here and I wouldn't rule anything out," Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said Thursday. Assuming there's no last-minute additions to the roster, however, Thompson is the most likely candidate to take on the starting job after a strong training camp, although Donovan Wilson has also made a good impression. Cornerbacks Daryl Worley, Reggie Robinson and even Chidobe Awuzie could also be in the mix for snaps at safety, as new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan has stressed flexibility in his secondary during camp. Thompson has starting experience from his days with the Giants, recording 75 tackles, six passes defended and one interception over 16 games in 2017.
