Thornton was released by the 49ers on Friday.
Thornton came out of retirement in April after sitting out the 2018 season. It appears he did not make enough of an impression to make a serious bid at landing on the 49ers' roster. It is unclear if the 30-year-old will continue his efforts at a comeback after this news.

49ers' Cedric Thornton: Steps out of retirement
Thornton was reinstated to the 49ers' active roster Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
After announcing his retirement last August, Thornton now rejoins the 49ers on the first day of their offseason program. The 30-year-old has spent time with the Eagles, Cowboys and Bills across seven seasons, appearing in 89 career games with 48 starts, 278 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He projects to compete for a depth role at defensive tackle this offseason.

Bills' Cedric Thornton: Latches on with Buffalo
Thornton signed a contract with the Bills on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old was on the open market for only a few days after the Cowboys cut ties with him when a hamstring injury sidelined him for much of training camp. Buffalo's decision to bring Thornton aboard suggests he's reasonably healthy now, but it's not expected that he'll see many snaps this season behind the dominant defensive tackle tandem of Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams.

The Cowboys had to cut someone to make room for newly acquired linebacker Jayrone Elliott. Thorton had been dealing with some injuries recently and wasn't expected to be a major contributor among the defensive front this season which made him an expendable candidate.

Thornton has been bothered by a hamstring injury for several weeks but is seemingly feeling better. It's unlikely the Cowboys would allow the 29-year-old to participate in practice unless they were comfortable with his health. However, with all the time he has missed during training camp, his starting role could potentially be in jeopardy.

Thornton has been dealing with a hamstring injury the past couple of weeks, but it sounds as though he's finally making some progress in his recovery. The 29-year-old should increase his activity in the days to come, but because of all the time he's missed in the preseason, he may no longer be guaranteed a starting role heading into Week 1.

Thornton left Tuesday's practice with a hamstring injury, Clarence Hill Jr of the Star-Telegram reports.
Thornton underwent shoulder surgery back in January, but was cleared for the start of training camp. However, he's now dealing with a hamstring injury following Tuesday's practice, although the exact severity is currently unknown. More details should be provided later this week, but there's a chance Thornton is held out of Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams depending on how the injury responds to treatment.

Thornton suffered a hamstring injury during practice Tuesday, Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Thornton joined Tyrone Crawford (leg) as a starting Cowboys defensive lineman to exit practice early Tuesday. It's unclear how Thornton suffered his injury or how severe it is. If he's limited or held out at all going forward look for Jordan Carrell and Joey Ivie to see some extra reps.
