  • Cornelius Washington: Let go by Detroit

The Lions released Washington on Monday.

Washington suited up for 30 games over the last two seasons between Chicago and Detroit, making 44 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four pass breakups. The Lions brought in defensive tackles Sylvester Williams and Ricky Jean Francois via free agency, so Washington's depth role wasn't necessary anymore. He'll have less than three weeks to make another team before Week 1.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Activated off NFI list

Washington (undisclosed) was activated off the NFI list Friday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Washington is expected to play a rotational role for the Lions this fall. The defensive end served in a similar capacity during his first year with the Lions last season and contributed 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Because of his experience in both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, Washington could be a great fit in a Matt Patricia scheme that places a premium on versatility.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Lands on NFI list

Washington (undisclosed) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Washington took part in most activities during spring workouts this offseason, so it isn't clear what he's dealing with. When healthy, the five-year vet will look to compete for a depth role along the defensive line.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Finds success in Detroit

Washington recorded 24 tackles, 2.5 sacks and three PBUs across 15 games in 2017.

Signed by Detroit in the offseason after spending his first four years with Chicago, Washington enjoyed a strong season in 2017 and easily turned in the most productive campaign of his career. He ultimately finished as a top-40 4-3 defensive end by Pro Football Focus, mostly due to his strong work as a pass rusher. He isn't in the IDP conversation quite yet, but that could change if the Lions are unable to re-sign starting defensive end Ezekiel Ansah this offseason.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Suiting up Sunday

Washington (shoulder) is active for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.

Washington was limited in practice throughout the week due to his injury, but it isn't expected to slow him down much in Sunday's tilt. Expect him to see his usual role as a backup along the defensive line.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Injures shoulder Sunday

Washington sustained a shoulder injury in Sunday's loss to the Ravens, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.

Washington was designated questionable to return but never appeared to retake the field. The Lions' depth at defensive end is being tested with Ezekiel Ansah injuring his ankle Sunday, as well.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Posts two sacks Sunday

Washington recorded four tackles (three solo) and two sacks in Sunday's win against the Browns.

This kind of performance isn't typical of Washington, and most of it can be attributed to Ezekiel Ansah (back) sitting out Sunday. This is why he was able to log a season-high 48 defensive snaps, which led him to this uncharacteristic stat line. However, if Ansah remains out against the Bears in Week 11, Washington could once again be a cheap fantasy option with high upside.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Free from injury report

Washington was absent from Wednesday's injury report.

Washington appears locked into a starting role entering Week 1 with Kerry Hyder (Achilles) done for the year. If his health cooperates (Washington's missed 33 of 64 career games), the Georgia product seems poised for an increase in statistical production after setting a career-high 20 tackles and two sacks with the Bears last season.

  • Lions' Cornelius Washington: Injures leg Monday

Washington suffered a left leg injury during Monday's practice, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.

It isn't clear if this is the same issue that landed Washington on the Non-Football Injury list earlier in training camp, but this development nonetheless leaves the Lions woefully thin at defensive end with Ziggy Ansah (undisclosed), Armonty Bryant (undisclosed) and Jeremiah Valoaga (undisclosed) all residing on the Physically Unable to Perform list at present time. Unless something changes, look for Kerry Hyder and Brandon Copeland to work with the starters for the remainder of training camp.
