Whitney Mercilus: Retires from NFL
Mercilus announced his retirement Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Mercilus split time between the Texans and Packers during his final campaign, totaling 17 tackles (nine solo) and four sacks across 10 appearances. The veteran made an improbable return from a mid-season biceps injury and appeared in Green Bay's playoff loss to the 49ers, but he'll hang up the cleats after not liking the options available to him in free agency. The 2012 first-round pick ends his 10-year career with 117 quarterback hits, 58 sacks and 13 forced fumbles.

Packers' Whitney Mercilus: Future looks murky
Mercilus recorded 17 tackles (nine solo) and four sacks across 10 combined appearances with the Texans and Packers in 2021.
Mercilus ended the 2021 campaign in Green Bay, where he managed an improbable return to action after a mid-season biceps injury. The 31-year-old will head into free agency this spring and still be able to carve out a role for the 2022 season somewhere, but his chances of returning to IDP relevance appear slim.

Packers' Whitney Mercilus: Back on active roster
Mercilus (biceps) was activated off injured reserve Friday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
As expected, Mercilus will be available for Saturday's divisional matchup with the 49ers. However, it remains unclear what kind of role the veteran pass rusher will have. He was initially expected to be out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a biceps injury in mid-November, but he's made an improbable recovery. The Packers are also getting Za'Darius Smith (back) back for the playoffs. In corresponding moves, Green Bay released Isaac Yiadom and Jack Heflin.

Packers' Whitney Mercilus: Returns to practice
Mercilus (biceps) was designated to return from injured reserve Thursday, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.
Mercilus was initially expected to be out for the remainder of the season after he sustained a biceps injury in mid-November, but he'll rejoin the Packers for practice ahead of the playoffs. Whether he's available for the divisional round remains to be seen, but his return to the practice field is certainly encouraging.

Packers' Whitney Mercilus: Done for season
Mercilus (biceps) will miss the rest of the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Mercilus left early Sunday against the Seahawks and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game. He joined the Packers on Oct. 21 and contributed three sacks in four appearances. The veteran will now focus on being ready for 2022. In his absence, Preston Smith will continue to see extra opportunity, as will Oren Burks.
