Shea McClellin: Playing days likely over
McClellin is uncertain to continue his playing career due to the "cumulative effect of concussions," Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. "I'm still staying ready, still working out. I've learned to never say never, there's always a chance that I could still play again, but for now all my focus is on coaching high school [football]," McClellin said.
While McClellin isn't officially retiring, that appears to be a likely outcome for the linebacker, who has sustained five documented concussions over the course of his career. A first-round pick of the Bears in 2012, McClellin has appeared in 66 regular-season games with Chicago and New England, accruing 8.5 sacks. He spent the entire 2017 campaign on the Patriots' injured reserve list with a concussion before getting released in March.

Shea McClellin: Cut by New England
McClellin (concussion) was released by the Patriots on Monday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Per the report, McClellin's release stems from a failed physical, which may stem from missing the entirety of the 2017 season due to the aftereffects of a concussion. The 28-year-old should draw attention from other teams.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Move to season-ending IR confirmed
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick confirmed Wednesday that McClellin (concussion) wouldn't be activated from injured reserve, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
With McClellin's 21-day practice window coming to a close Wednesday and the linebacker having recently suffered a setback in his recovery from the concussion, it was an easy choice for the Patriots to shut him down for the season rather than activate him. McClellin will enter the final year of his three-year, $8.95 million contract with the Patriots in 2018.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Not expected to return following setback
McClellin, who was previously placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, is dealing with a concussion and recently suffered a setback in practice, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports.
The linebacker was eligible to return from IR this week, but the setback now puts McClellin's season in jeopardy. It looks like the Patriots will remain as cautious as possible with McClellin given how long his recovery from the concussion has dragged on, so look for the team to instead use its two available slots to activate players from IR elsewhere.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Debuts at practice Wednesday
McClellin (undisclosed) returned to practice Wednesday, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports.
McClellin hadn't practiced since suffering a still-undisclosed injury during the opening days of training camp. The Patriots now have a three-week window to activate McClellin to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Could return to practice this week
Coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday that there is a "possibility" that McClellin (undisclosed) could return to practice this week, Nora Princiotti of The Boston Globe reports.
McClellin was placed on injured reserve at the start of the regular season after missing most of training camp. Whether McClellin is back at practice this week, it is clear, given Belichick's optimism, that the linebacker is close to making his return to the field. Expect another update on his status to come later in the week.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Lands on IR
McClellin (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Monday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
McClellin missed the majority of the preseason with an undisclosed injury and will now be sidelined for at least the first half of season. The six-year pro was a key contributor on special teams and select defensive packages for the Super Bowl champs last season, playing in 14 games and making four starts. In a corresponding move, the Patriots resigned running back Brandon Bolden - another key special teamer for the Patriots over the past few years.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Missing practices lately
McClellin (undisclosed) has not participated in practices recently, Erik Scalavino of the Patriots' official site reports.
McClellin isn't in danger of being left off the roster, but he's still fighting for more snaps this season after free-agent signee David Harris arrived in New England. The Boise State product posted 41 tackles and one sack in 2016.

Patriots' Shea McClellin: Playing time may take a hit
McClellin could see his playing time take a hit this season due to the addition of David Harris, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
McClellin played 34.5 percent of the defensive snaps last season, tallying 41 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery in the process. The Jets surprisingly cut Harris in an economic-based move, but he figures to get plenty of snaps for the Patriots. It remains to be seen how his presence will cut into McClellin's snaps, but he will presumably see less time on the field.
