Sheppard didn't sign with the Lions until midseason and only saw time on defense in one game. The 31-year-old veteran will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the league year.

Lions' Kelvin Sheppard: Joins Lions
The Lions signed Sheppard to their active roster Wednesday.
Sheppard most recently appeared with the Giants in 2017, playing in seven games and totaling 49 tackles and two interceptions. The 30-year-old linebacker will look to provide depth for Detroit.

Giants' Kelvin Sheppard: Productive in return to Giants
Sheppard accounted for 49 tackles (32 solo), four passes defensed and two interceptions in seven games during the 2017 regular season.
Sheppard, who was released by the Bears prior to the start of the 2017 regular season, re-joined the Giants in early November after appearing in all 16 games with the team in 2016. The middle linebacker notched a pair of interceptions in the Giants' season finale against the Redskins, but it remains to be seen if he'll remain in New York throughout 2018 as he's set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Sheppard's status for Thursday's game was in question after he was only able to practice in limited fashion throughout the short week. However, the 29-year-old's health is up to par, and he could see more snaps than usual with the Giants dealing with a plethora of injuries at linebacker.

Sheppard (groin) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Redskins, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Sheppard was a limited participant in this week's shortened practice sessions, but even that still represents a step up from the single limited practice he logged last week. The 29-year-old has played in only one game this season, but with fellow linebackers B.J. Goodson (ankle) out, Calvin Munson (quadriceps) doubtful, and Jonathan Casillas (neck) questionable, there is some potential for Sheppard to see extensive snaps if he can suit up Thanksgiving Day.

Sheppard (groin) is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
Sheppard has only played in one game this season, logging 26 defensive snaps and accruing six tackles (five solo). However, this was while the Giants' linebacker unit was injury plagued, so even if he was healthy, the eighth-year pro likely wouldn't play much outside of special teams.
