The 49ers traded tight end Asante Cleveland to the Patriots on Tuesday in exchange for offensive lineman Jordan Devey.
Cleveland appeared in six games as a rookie in 2014. He did not record a catch.
Devey, who was an undrafted free agent in 2013, appeared in seven games last season for New England. He made four starts.
