Mavericks' Dante Exum: Agrees to join Dallas
Exum agreed to a one-year, veteran's minimum deal with the Mavericks on Wednesday, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
According to Charania, Exum considered two other contenders in free agency, but he opted to return to Dallas. With Kyrie Irving (knee) expected to be sidelined through January, Exum could have a path to considerable minutes in the backcourt along with a new addition in D'Angelo Russell. Exum, who has struggled to stay healthy, appeared in 20 regular-season games in 2024-25 with averages of 8.7 points, 2.8 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 0.6 steals in 18.6 minutes per contest.

Exum missed the first 48 games of the season while recovering from right wrist surgery and was expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign due to a fractured left hand he suffered in March. However, Exum was able to return to action and play Dallas' final four contest. The Mavericks announced Saturday that Exum has been diagnosed with a left hand fracture and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.
Exum suffered the injury during Friday's loss to the Rockets and will miss the remainder of the regular season. With Dallas currently sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference, the Mavericks will need to make a deep run in the playoffs without Kyrie Irving (knee) and potentially Anthony Davis (adductor) in order to give Exum a chance of returning to action. Exum -- who is set to become a free agent this summer -- finished his second season in Dallas with averages of 9.1 points, 2.8 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 three-pointers in 19.1 minutes per game over 18 appearances.
