The Phoenix Suns will sign forward Chase Budinger once he clears waivers, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski. Budinger, 27, was recently released by the Indiana Pacers to clear a roster spot for guard Ty Lawson.
In order to sign Budinger, the Suns waived swingman Sonny Weems on Saturday. Weems only appeared in 36 games for Phoenix.
Budinger was in the Pacers' rotation for most of the year, but never quite found his niche there. Ideally he is a 3-and-D player, but he only made 29 percent of his 3-point attempts in Indiana.
For Phoenix, this is an opportunity to get a look at someone who can be a solid bench player as long as he's making shots. Budinger is not the player he once was before the knee injuries, but if he can just play a role effectively for the last 20 games of the season, he could earn himself a contract with the Suns or elsewhere when his contract expires in the summer.
Phoenix is 16-46, which is the third-worst record in the NBA.
