Player Outlook
Injuries continue to be a major problem for Francisco Alvarez, who missed the first few weeks of 2025 due to a left hand fracture and then suffered a torn UCL in his right thumb in August. The 24-year-old catcher returned from the IL and gutted it out for most of September before undergoing surgery early in the offseason, but the end result was still a 2025 campaign in which he played just 76 games. Despite the limited volume, Alvarez tied his homer total from 2024 with 11 long balls and improved his slash line across the board to a career-best .256/.339/.447, and that type of production is an encouraging development after he posted a .716 OPS across his first two seasons. He should enter 2026 locked in as the Mets' No. 1 catcher and has significant fantasy upside given the offensive improvements last year, but the durability concerns are a major mark on his profile. Alvarez could be a steal for fantasy managers if he's able to stay mostly healthy in 2026, but he's seemingly just as likely to be on the injured list for half the season.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Idle Tuesday

Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals. Alvarez will grab a seat on the bench Tuesday after going 1-for-3 with a walk in Monday's series opener. Luis Torrens will catch instead for starter Kodai Senga while batting ninth.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Back in lineup Saturday

Alvarez (back) will start behind the plate and bat ninth in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Alvarez was lifted from Thursday's exhibition due to back tightness, a move which left fantasy managers holding their breath, but he has made a quick turnaround. Assuming no further issues, Alvarez should be fine to catch for Freddy Peralta on Opening Day.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Could return Saturday

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Friday that Alvarez (back) is feeling "better" and could rejoin the Grapefruit League lineup Saturday if he continues to improve, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old backstop was removed from Thursday's Grapefruit League contest due to back tightness, but he may end up missing only one spring game. The Mets are likely to exercise caution with Opening Day less than a week away, but at this point Alvarez doesn't appear to be in danger of missing significant time.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Lifted Thursday due to tight back

Alvarez was removed from Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Houston due to back tightness, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports. Alvarez struck out in the third inning in his only plate appearance and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the fourth. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said the backstop's exit was precautionary, though it's not clear if Alvarez will miss additional time. He's been having a strong spring, slashing .364/.423/.636 with one home run, three doubles and four RBI through 10 games.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Swinging hot bat in camp

Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and an RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. Alvarez has looked good this spring, batting .381 (8-for-21) with three doubles and a homer. The 24-year-old backstop is locked into the starting spot for the Mets, and given how he finished last season -- .276/.360/.561 over 41 games after the All-Star break with eight home runs -- a breakout could be in the cards if Alvarez can stay healthy in 2026.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Will get eased into spring action

Alvarez isn't expected to see game action this spring until the second week of the Grapefruit League schedule, Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic report. The Mets are bringing a number of key position players along slowly this spring, including Luis Robert, Jorge Polanco and Brett Baty (hamstring). Alvarez underwent thumb surgery right after the end of last season, which explains the team's caution with its starting catcher, but the 24-year-old appeared to be fully healthy when he reported to camp. The Mets are hoping that good health extends into the regular season -- Alvarez played only 76 games in 2025, his lowest total in three years since becoming a big-league regular.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Drops pounds, will keep new stance

Alvarez said Friday that he lost 8-to-10 pounds this offseason after changing his diet, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Alvarez also added that he worked with director of hitting Jeff Albert in the offseason and plans to keep the batting stance he used down the stretch last season. The young catcher was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse for a while after struggling, and when he returned he went back to his old stance and slashed .276/.360/.561 with eight home runs in his final 40 games. Still just 24, Alvarez is a viable candidate to take a step forward in 2026. He underwent right thumb UCL surgery after the season but reported to spring training at full health.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Avoids arbitration with Mets

The Mets and Alvarez (thumb) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.4 million contract Thursday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Alvarez had been arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier following a season that saw him put up a .787 OPS with 11 home runs over 76 tilts. The 24-year-old was scheduled to have surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right thumb shortly after the season, but he's expected to be ready to go for spring training.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: On bench Sunday

Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. He'll give way to Luis Torrens behind the plate Sunday after starting at catcher in the first two games of the series. Alvarez has gone 8-for-25 (.320 average) with two home runs in his last seven games.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Good to go after HBP

Alvarez (triceps) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Alvarez was lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win after he was plunked by a Bradgley Rodriguez 100-mph fastball during his fourth and final plate appearance. Though Alvarez -- who has been playing through a broken pinkie finger on his left hand and a torn UCL in his right thumb -- has now been hit on the left arm by a pitch three times in the last three weeks, he'll be able to fight through any lingering soreness and step back in behind the dish Wednesday.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Sitting Thursday

Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. Alvarez will get a day to regroup after going just 2-for-18 with nine strikeouts in six games since returning from the injured list. Hayden Senger will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Idle Saturday

Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Cincinnati. Alvarez went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts Friday in his return from a finger injury, and the Mets will get him another day to rest Saturday. While he sits, Luis Torrens will start behind the plate and bat eighth.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Officially activated

Alvarez (finger) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday. As expected, Alvarez rejoins the active roster after being sidelined with a sprained right thumb and a fractured left index finger, the latter of which occurred in a rehab game. The Mets optioned Hayden Senger to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set to return Friday

Alvarez (finger) will be activated from the injured list Friday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Alvarez has been on a rehab assignment since Aug. 26 and was able to catch a full game Sunday. He's gone 4-for-19 across parts of five games and should take over as the Mets' primary catcher upon his return.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Catches nine innings at Triple-A

Alvarez (thumb/finger) was able to catch all nine innings of Sunday's game with Triple-A Syracuse, and he appears to be close to returning from the injured list, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The 23-year-old backstop landed on the IL on Aug. 18 due to a right thumb injury that will likely require offseason surgery, and Alvarez's digits continued to take a beating on a rehab assignment last week when he was hit by a pitch and fractured his lefty pinky finger Wednesday. Incredibly, he was only sidelined until Saturday before resuming his rehab stint, and pain tolerance appears to be the biggest hurdle before he'll be able to return to the Mets. That said, over his two games this weekend with Syracuse he went 1-for-9 with six strikeouts, and trying to play through injuries to both hands isn't going to help his performance as a hitter.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Starting rehab assignment Wednesday

Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Alvarez took batting practice on the field Tuesday and insisted afterward that he feels no pain in his right thumb despite being diagnosed with a UCL sprain. He will be eligible for activation from the 10-day injured list Thursday, but the Mets could wait until rosters expand Sept. 1 to return their starting catcher to the active roster.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Out at least 10 days

The Mets placed Alvarez on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb Tuesday, and he'll be re-evaluated in 10-to-14 days. The 23-year-old suffered the injury during Sunday's win over the Mariners, when he jammed his thumb on a head-first slide into second base. Alvarez appears to be a good bet to return before the end of the season, but when exactly he's ready to go will depend how well he recovers over the next couple of weeks.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Requires MRI on thumb

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after Sunday's 7-3 win over the Mariners that Alvarez would return to New York on Monday to undergo an MRI on his jammed right thumb, the Associated Press reports. "Right now, we don't know what we're dealing with," Mendoza said of Alvarez's injury. Alvarez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI before exiting in the eighth inning, after he had initially stayed in the game upon jamming the thumb on a head-first slide into second base on his seventh-inning double. The Mets are off Monday, so the team will likely wait for the results on Alvarez's MRI to become available before determining if he'll meet back up with the team in Washington on Tuesday for the start of a three-game set with the Nationals. Luis Torrens would be in line to take over as the Mets' No. 1 catcher if Alvarez requires a stint on the injured list.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Exits early Sunday

Alvarez was removed from Sunday's contest against the Mariners in the eighth inning due to a right hand injury, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. Alvarez appeared to jam his hand on a head-first slide into second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, which ultimately required him to leave the game in the following frame. The catcher finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. More information on his status will likely be provided following the contest.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Idle Thursday

Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against Atlanta. Alvarez will grab a seat for Thursday's series finale after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Wednesday's contest. Luis Torrens will catch instead for starter Kodai Senga and bat ninth.
