  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Stops bleeding late, earns save

Abreu earned the save Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing one unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings. The right-hander was summoned in the eighth inning after Enyel De Los Santos nearly squandered a 6-1 lead. Abreu, who had allowed eight runs over his previous six appearances, looked to be in danger of another rough outing as he gave up an RBI single to Adolis Garcia following a walk to the first batter he faced. However, Abreu managed to settle down, escape further damage and finish off the ninth to secure his seventh save of the season. The performance not only helped seal a much-needed win for Houston but also provided a confidence boost for Abreu. He owns a 2.37 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 103:31 K:BB across 68.1 innings on the year.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Shaky in sixth save

Abreu allowed two hits and a walk in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Monday's 6-3 win over the Rangers. Abreu erased his first mistake with a double play, then put two more runners on base before ending the game with another groundball out. He's allowed multiple baserunners in four of his last six appearances, allowing a total of eight runs over 5.2 innings in that span. Despite the recent struggles, he continues to serve as the fill-in closer while Josh Hader (shoulder) is out. Abreu has a 2.42 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB with six saves and 25 holds over 67 innings this season.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Bounces back with fifth save

Abreu picked up the save Wednesday against Toronto, striking out one in a clean ninth inning. One night after blowing a save against the Blue Jays, Abreu rebounded with his fifth save of the season Wednesday. The hard-throwing right-hander has fanned at least one in nine consecutive outings, and he remains in position to close out the regular season as Houston's stopper in the absence of closer Josh Hader (shoulder). Through 66 frames this year, Abreu has a 2.45 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Blows save Tuesday

Abreu gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in the ninth inning Tuesday, getting charged with his fifth blown save of the season in a 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out two. Called in to protect a 3-1 lead, Abreu loaded the bases on two walks and a single before serving up a two-run single to Isiah Kiner-Falefa with one out. It was the right-hander's first blown save in five chances since taking over the closer mantle from Josh Hader (shoulder) in early August, but it may only have been a matter of time before Abreu faltered -- he's been tagged for multiple runs in three of his last four appearances, bumping up his ERA on the season from 1.47 to 2.49.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Extends scoreless streak in save

Abreu notched the save Thursday against Colorado, allowing one hit and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two. Abreu secured his fourth save of the year and extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings. With Josh Hader (shoulder) likely to be out until the playoffs, Abreu has established a fairly strong grip on Houston's closer gig. • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Notches second save

Abreu struck out four in 1.1 scoreless innings Friday to record his second save of the season in a 10-7 win over the Orioles. Plunking Coby Mayo (hand) with a pitch was the only blemish on a dominant relief performance by Abreu. The right-hander hasn't given up a run in August, posting a 0.70 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB over 10 innings, and with Josh Hader (shoulder) likely out for the rest of the regular season, Abreu is locked into the closer role for the Astros.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Records first save Wednesday

Abreu picked up the save Wednesday against Boston, striking out two while allowing two hits and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning. With All-Star closer Josh Hader (shoulder) on the injured list, Abreu was called upon to protect a three-run lead and secured his first save of the season. The hard-throwing right-hander has been Houston's top setup man in 2025 -- he has 25 holds this year -- so he stands out as the team's favorite for saves while Hader is on the shelf. Abreu has a shiny 1.64 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 81:25 K:BB across 55 innings this season.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Charged with loss, blown save

Abreu (1-2) was charged with the loss and a blown save in Friday's 5-3 loss to Seattle after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. He struck out two. It was the third blown save of the season for Abreu, who is now 0-for-3 in save situations in 2025. Even so, Friday marked his first time allowing a run since April 9, so the right-hander doesn't appear to be in jeopardy of dropping down Houston's bullpen hierarchy despite this showing. Abreu has been a key setup man behind closer Josh Hader, with the former logging a 1.99 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 28:12 K:BB over 22.2 innings this year.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Avoids arbitration with Houston

The Astros and Abreu avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.45 million contract Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. He was arbitration-eligible for a second time this winter. Abreu's ERA rose to 3.10 ERA during the 2024 regular season, but he notched 100 strikeouts in relief for the second year in a row and will again be a primary setup man ahead of closer Josh Hader in the Houston bullpen in 2025.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Earns first save

Abreu allowed a hit in a scoreless inning and earned a save over Baltimore on Friday. Abreu worked around a two-out single to close out the chaotic 14-11 victory. It was his first save of the year and he extended his scoreless streak to 8.2 innings. After allowing six runs in 5.2 innings to begin his season, Abreu has yielded just five runs in his last 32 appearances, lowering his season ERA to 2.58. Josh Hader seemingly received a routine day off after earning back-to-back saves against the White Sox on Wednesday and Thursday.

He was roughed up in his 2024 debut Saturday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. With Josh Hader also unavailable Monday, the Astros will look to Ryan Pressly, Rafael Montero and Seth Martinez as their main options out of the bullpen.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Settles at $1.75 million

The Astros and Abreu avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.75 million contract Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. It's a well-earned raise for Abreu, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The hard-throwing reliever has been dominant for Houston over the last two seasons, posting a 1.84 ERA and 188:57 K:BB across 132.1 innings. If anything happens to closer Ryan Pressly, Abreu would be next in line.

However, Abreu will likely appeal the decision, which would allow the 26-year-old reliever to continue pitching until his hearing. Abreu has been a crucial part of Houston's bullpen during its postseason run, surrendering just one run over 6.1 innings while racking up 11 strikeouts.

  • Astros' Bryan Abreu: Notches fifth save

Abreu has earned three saves and eight holds with a 34:13 K:BB during his 27.2-inning scoreless streak, which dates back to July 18. This was among his shakier outings in that span, but he was able to get the job done. The setup man has a 1.75 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB with five saves and 24 holds over 72 innings this season.
