Pirates' Chase Shugart: Sent to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Shugart to Triple-A Indianapolis after Wednesday's win against the Blue Jays.
The right-hander has been a quality bullpen piece for Pittsburgh this year with a 3.50 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:17 K:BB across 43.2 innings, but he'll lose his place on the big-league roster with top prospect Bubba Chandler set to be promoted. Given Shugart's performance, he should receive another look with Pittsburgh before the end of the season.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Returns from IL
The Pirates activated Shugart (knee) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
Left knee inflammation had sidelined Shugart since early July, but he's been cleared to return after making three rehab appearances. The righty reliever holds a 3.69 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 39 innings this season, but a 22:15 K:BB is less than ideal.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Begins rehab assignment
Shugart (knee) began a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton on Sunday, MLB.com reports.
Shugart has been sidelined since early July and resumed throwing a couple of weeks ago. He should be able to return relatively quickly and could immediately serve in a high-leverage role.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Resumes mound work
Shugart (knee) resumed throwing off a mound last Wednesday, MLB.com reports.
Shugart had been scheduled to throw a proper bullpen session later in the week, but the Pirates haven't confirmed whether or not that happened. In any event, Shugart seems to be taking steps forward in his recovery from left knee inflammation, but he'll still likely need to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated from the 15-day injured list.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Lands on IL
The Pirates placed Shugart on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with left knee inflammation.
Shugart pitched Monday for the first time in a week, allowing four earned runs over just 2.2 innings, and he appears to have come away from his latest outing with a knee issue. He'll remain out until at least July 23, and the Pirates will choose to operate with one less man in their bullpen by bringing up Jack Suwinski from Triple-A to provide extra outfield depth.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Optioned to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Shugart to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
The move corresponds with the Pirates recalling catcher Henry Davis from Indianapolis. Shugart made three appearances out of the Pirates' bullpen after being called up to the big club April 6, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two in 3.2 scoreless innings. The 28-year-old right-hander could be recalled by Pittsburgh again if the parent club is in need of depth out of the bullpen.

Pirates' Chase Shugart: Sent to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Shugart to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Shugart made five appearances during spring training. He was off to a good start with three consecutive scoreless innings before imploding for five runs in just one-third of an inning against the Pirates back on March 2. The 28-year-old was able to earn a promotion to the big leagues at the end of the 2024 season for Boston, notching a 4.15 ERA over 8.2 innings. The right-hander will have to claw his way back from Triple-A in 2025.

Red Sox's Chase Shugart: Booted from 40-man roster
The Red Sox designated Shugart for assignment Wednesday, Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster reports.
The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Blake Sabol, who was acquired from San Francisco via trade. Shugart, 28, made his major-league debut in 2024, allowing four runs over 8.2 frames out of Boston's bullpen. He should stand a good chance of passing through waivers unclaimed.

Red Sox's Chase Shugart: Secures first career save
Shugart worked around two walks in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday en route to his first career save in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Blue Jays.
Chris Martin worked a scoreless ninth inning to protect a 3-3 tie, while Justin Slaten had pitched earlier in the night, so manager Alex Cora had limited options to handle the bottom of the 10th after Boston took the lead. Lefty Zach Penrod began the frame, but his first offering was a wild pitch that sent the phantom runner to third base, and Penrod got only one out while putting two batters aboard. Shugart then took the mound and walked in one of his inherited runners, but he eventually got Addison Barger to pop out to end the game. Roles at the back of the Boston bullpen remain in flux over the final handful of games with Kenley Jansen (shoulder) on the shelf, but Shugart should be considered unlikely to see another save chance.
