  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Roughed up by Tigers

Arrighetti (1-4) coughed up five runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings to take the loss Monday at Detroit. He struck out five. The Houston right-hander was pitching well through the first four frames, allowing one run on a solo homer by Wenceel Perez in the fourth. Then the floodgates opened in the fifth, as Arrighetti conceded four runs on four hits and two walks, capped by a three-run blast by Riley Greene. The 25-year-old has struggled since his return from a thumb injury Aug. 6, pitching to an unsightly 7.90 ERA, 2.12 WHIP and 13:10 K:BB over 13.2 innings. Arrighetti will look to bounce back in his next start, which currently lines up to be at Baltimore this weekend.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Knocked around in return

Arrighetti (1-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing five runs on 11 hits and one walk in 3.2 innings. He struck out five. Arrighetti showed plenty of rust and a lack of command on his pitch locations in his first major-league start since April 5 in Minnesota, surrendering a career-high 11 hits Wednesday in his first game back from a thumb fracture. The 25-year-old right-hander did produce 16 whiffs during his abbreviated outing, which was perhaps an encouraging takeaway, but he may have been a bit too aggressive in attacking the strike zone overall. Arrighetti has a rough 7.43 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB over his first 12.2 innings this year, so he'll try to right the ship during a scheduled home tilt versus the Red Sox his next time out.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Rejoining rotation in Miami

Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed Sunday that Arrighetti (thumb) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start either Tuesday or Wednesday in Miami, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Arrighetti is finally ready to rejoin the Houston rotation after he had been on the shelf since April 8 due to a right thumb fracture, which he sustained when he was struck by a flyball during batting practice. The right-hander kicked off a rehab assignment July 19, and over his three outings between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugar Land, Arrighetti turned in a 5.73 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB in 11 innings. He got stretched out to 4.2 innings and 79 pitches in his final rehab outing with Sugar Land this past Thursday, so Arrighetti is unlikely to face any major workload restrictions in his return to the Astros.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Close to return

Astros manager Joe Espada said Friday that Arrighetti (thumb) "is in a position to make his next start at the major-league level," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Arrighetti has made three rehab appearances, and despite being roughed up in his last outing Thursday with Triple-A Sugar Land, a return to the majors appears to be around the corner for the 25-year-old right-hander. With Arrighetti pitching Thursday and barring any setbacks, he could be back in the Astros' rotation as early as next week on the road against the Marlins. He made two starts for Houston before landing on the injured list in early April due to a right thumb fracture.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Roughed up in rehab start

Arrighetti (thumb) allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out five across 4.2 innings in his rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Sugar Land. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. Arrighetti made his third rehab outing and his first at Triple-A, and though his results weren't great, he built up to 79 pitches (50 strikes). Assuming the right-hander comes out of his next bullpen session no worse for the wear, the Astros could activate him from the 60-day injured list to make a start during their series in Miami early next week. Arrighetti has been on the shelf since April 8 due to a right thumb fracture.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Makes second rehab appearance

Arrighetti (thumb) threw 62 pitches in his rehab appearance Saturday with Double-A Corpus Christi. Arrighetti covered 3.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out two. He was sharper in his first rehab outing, though he did progress from 43 pitches. Arrighetti will make at least one more rehab appearance before being activated.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Begins rehab stint Saturday

Arrighetti (thumb) tossed three scoreless innings in a rehab start with Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out four batters. Arrighetti was sharp in his first game action since early April, throwing 29 of 43 pitches for strikes and allowing just one baserunner. The right-hander is making his way back from a fractured right thumb that he suffered when struck by a line drive during batting practice April 7. Per the Houston Chronicle, Arrighetti will likely need "several more" rehab starts before he's ready to be activated from the injured list.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Closing in on rehab assignment

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Arrighetti (thumb) could be ready to begin a rehab assignment in about a week or a week and a half, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Brown noted that Arrighetti has resumed throwing live batting practice sessions at the Astros' spring training facility in Florida, and the 25-year-old righty sounds like he'll get the green light to start up a rehab assignment shortly after the All-Star break. Arrighetti made just two starts to begin the season before being placed on the injured list April 8 due to a fractured right thumb, so he'll likely require multiple outings in the minors to build up his pitch count before he's cleared to rejoin the big-league rotation. Arrighetti could be back with the Astros at some point in early or mid-August.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Set to face hitters soon

Astros manager Joe Espada said Friday that Arrighetti (thumb) is expected to complete one more bullpen session before he faces live hitters, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Arrighetti completed 15- and 20-pitch bullpen sessions June 24 and June 27, respectively, so he'll presumably build on that pitch count while mixing in all of his offerings during his next side session. The right-hander will likely need to throw multiple live batting practice sessions before then heading out on a rehab assignment, perhaps shortly after the All-Star break. Arrighetti appears to be tracking toward a late-July or early-August return from the 60-day injured list, but a more precise target date won't come into focus until he's out on the rehab assignment.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Looks ready for mound work

Astros general manager Dana Brown said that Arrighetti (thumb) could throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. If Arrighetti does complete a side session Tuesday, it would be his first time stepping back on the mound since early April, when he was placed on the injured list after he fractured his right thumb when it was struck by a ball during batting practice. The right-hander will presumably need to complete multiple bullpen sessions while incorporating all his pitches before he advances to facing live hitters. After that, Arrighetti will likely require at least a couple of minor-league rehab starts to build up his pitch count, so he shouldn't be expected to make his return from the 60-day injured list until after the All-Star break.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Transferred to 60-day IL

Houston transferred Arrighetti to the 60-day injured list Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Arrighetti broke his right thumb after being hit by a ball during batting practice in early April and had been on the 15-day IL since. The move to the 60-day IL doesn't affect the hurler's timeline to return -- early July remains a best-case scenario -- but it does open a spot on the team's 40-man roster. Arrighetti will likely need a minor-league rehab stint before he's ready to rejoin Houston's rotation.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Playing catch from 70 feet

Arrighetti (thumb) played catch from 70 feet while traveling with the team during its weekend series against Cleveland, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Arrighetti has made slow progress since breaking his thumb in early April. The injury is now completely healed, but he is building back up as if it were spring training. As a result, Arrighetti is not expected to return until July.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Not expected back until July

Astros general manager Dana Brown said in a recent interview that he hopes to get Arrighetti (thumb) back "somewhere in the month of July," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Arrighetti has had the cast on his fractured right thumb removed and has begun strengthening exercises. However, he has not yet started up a throwing program, and once he does he will nearly be building up from scratch after suffering the injury April 7. Arrighetti is currently on the 15-day injured list but is a candidate to be shifted to the 60-day IL if the Astros need to free up a spot on their 40-man roster.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Imaging shows thumb is healing

Arrighetti got imaging on his fractured right thumb Monday that showed the bone is healing properly, Will Kunkel of FOX 26 Houston reports. Arrighetti was able to shed his cast, but he is still not able to do any throwing. Instead, he will focus on strengthening his legs until he is cleared to begin a throwing program. A timetable for Arrighetti's return to the Astros' rotation won't be established until he ramps up his throwing.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Early exit in Minnesota

Arrighetti (1-1) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Astros fell 6-1 to the Twins. He struck out three. All the damage against the right-hander came in the fourth inning, as 10 men came to the plate for Minnesota. Arrighetti got the hook in the middle of that sequence, tossing 42 of 70 pitches for strikes before he left the mound. It was a disappointing stumble after he delivered a quality start in his 2025 debut, and Arrighetti will take a 5.59 ERA and 8:5 K:BB through 9.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Angels.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Fans five in quality start

Arrighetti (1-0) got the win Saturday against the Mets, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out five across six innings. Arrighetti retired the 12 straight batters after allowing a pair of baserunners in the first inning and held a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth. He gave up his lone run when he fielded a groundball from Juan Soto and casually tossed it to first base, which allowed Jose Siri to dash to home plate and barely beat out the tag. It was the only blemish in what was a strong start for Arrighetti, who is tentatively slated to start against the Twins on the road next week.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Mixed results in spring starts

Arrighetti recorded two shutout innings while striking out three and not allowing a baserunner in Saturday's Grapefruit League game. Arrighetti was shaky in his opening spring outing, handing out three free passes in two innings of work. Saturday's appearance showed improvement, as he threw 17 of his 29 pitches for strikes. Arrighetti will have high expectations in 2025 after maintaining a 3.18 ERA across his final 65 innings to close last campaign.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Takes low-scoring loss

Arrighetti (7-13) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings, taking the loss versus the Padres on Monday. Arrighetti allowed an RBI double to Manny Machado in the first inning and a solo home run to Jackson Merrill in the fourth. This was Arrighetti's third straight outing without a win, though he's limited opponents to two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. The rookie right-hander is now at a 4.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 161:62 K:BB through 136.2 innings over 27 starts. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Angels.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Bounces back with no-decision

Arrighetti allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Tuesday. Arrighetti gave up a run in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run to Zack Gelof, but he was able to settle in after that. This was a good bounce-back performance for Arrighetti after he failed to complete one inning in Cincinnati in his previous start. The rookie right-hander is now at a 4.72 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 158:61 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 26 starts this season, though he's allowed three or more runs just four times in his last nine starts. Arrighetti is projected to make his next start at San Diego with the Astros expected to use a six-man rotation this week.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Bounces back with dominant win

Arrighetti (6-11) notched the victory against Baltimore on Thursday, allowing three hits and issuing one walk while striking out six batters over six scoreless innings. Arrighetti began August with two excellent outings before stumbling with a 5.2-inning, four-run loss to the White Sox last Friday. The rookie bounced back with one of his best starts of the season Thursday, as he allowed just four total baserunners and retired the final eight batters he faced. Arrighetti also collected his fourth quality start over his past five outings, a span during which he has a 2.93 ERA and 44:8 K:BB across 30.2 frames.
