Sears (8-10) earned the victory over San Francisco on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two batters over six innings.
Sears struggled in his first start with San Diego on Aug. 4 and was subsequently optioned to the minors. The southpaw was called up Wednesday to face the Giants and showed vast improvement, logging a quality start while holding San Francisco to just one run. Sears wasn't exactly overpowering -- he notched just five whiffs and two strikeouts -- but he got the job done to help the Padres pick up a critical game in the NL West standings. With that said, Michael King (knee) may be able to return after a minimum-length stay on the IL, so it's unclear if Sears will stick in the rotation, move to the bullpen or eventually go back to Triple-A.

Padres' JP Sears: Called up ahead of start
Rotowire
The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants at Petco Park.
Sears was optioned to El Paso after getting tagged for five earned runs in five innings during his team debut Aug. 4 in Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he'll get another look as the Padres' No. 5 starter. After Randy Vasquez struggled during a bulk-relief appearance last Friday versus the Dodgers before being sent back to El Paso, Sears will get the next chance to fill the vacancy in the rotation that was created earlier this month when Michael King (knee) landed on the injured list. King is hopeful for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, so Sears may not be guaranteed any starts beyond Wednesday.

Padres' JP Sears: Rejoining big-league rotation
Rotowire
Manager Mike Shildt said that Sears will be recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Wednesday's game against the Giants, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
The left-hander was demoted Aug. 8 after surrendering five earned runs over five innings in his debut outing with the Padres, but he'll return to the big leagues for another look Wednesday. Prior to that poor appearance, Sears had a 4.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 97:29 K:BB across 111 innings with the Athletics this season.

Padres' JP Sears: Rough going in San Diego debut
Rotowire
Sears (7-10) allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings to take the loss versus the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Sears' debut for the Padres wasn't pretty, as the Diamondbacks were able to plate at least one run in each of the first four innings. The southpaw has allowed 19 runs (17 earned) across his last five starts (23.1 innings). Overall, he has a 5.12 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 101:30 K:BB through 116 innings across 23 starts between the Athletics and Padres. Sears' first home outing for the Padres is expected to be this weekend against the Red Sox.

Padres' JP Sears: Traded to Padres
Rotowire
The Padres acquired Sears and Mason Miller from the Athletics on Thursday in exchange for Leo De Vries and three pitchers, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Sears has posted a 4.95 ERA and 97:29 K:BB over 111 innings covering 22 starts this season for the Athletics and comes with team control through the 2028 campaign. With Sears supplementing their rotation, the Padres could now be more motivated to trade Dylan Cease to enhance their roster elsewhere.

Athletics' JP Sears: Inefficient in loss
Rotowire
Sears (7-9) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 4.1 innings.
While Sears kept the A's in the game, he couldn't provide much length, needing 96 pitches (58 strikes) to get through 4.1 frames. The lefty did miss plenty of bats, racking up 14 whiffs and six strikeouts, though he also tied a season high with three walks. Sears has perked up in the punchout department of late with at least six Ks in four of his past five starts, but he's also given up at least one long ball in four straight outings. On the season, he holds a 4.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 97:29 K:BB over 111 frames across 22 starts.

Athletics' JP Sears: Roughed up in second-half debut
Rotowire
Sears (7-8) took the loss after throwing four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five, during Friday's 8-6 loss to the Guardians.
A four-start streak of going at least five innings concluded Friday for Sears. He allowed just six runs over that stretch, so the seven runs he allowed accounted for more than he gave up over his last four starts combined. It also was the second-most runs he's allowed in one start this season behind the nine he gave up to the Astros on May 27. The 29-year-old will look to prove this was just a one-off and not the start of a pattern during his next start, scheduled to be on the road at the Rangers.

Athletics' JP Sears: Goes five innings in no-decision
Rotowire
Sears allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Thursday.
Sears was cruising until the fourth inning, when he allowed all three runs, including a two-run homer to Jurickson Profar. It was the first time Sears has been scored on since June 22 versus the Guardians. The southpaw was denied a third straight win after exiting with the game tied at 3-3, but this was still a decent effort. He's now at a 4.79 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 79:24 K:BB through 97.2 innings over 19 starts this season. He'll likely take the mound versus the Guardians in a road series after the All-Star break.

Athletics' JP Sears: Second straight scoreless outing
Rotowire
Sears (7-7) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday.
Sears has covered 11.2 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and five walks over his last two starts. He kept the Giants' offense under control Friday, and it appears the southpaw is turning a corner after mostly mixed results in May and June. He's now at a 4.76 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 73:24 K:BB through 92.2 innings over 18 starts this season. His next start is projected to be at home versus Atlanta.

Athletics' JP Sears: Blanks former club in sixth win
Rotowire
Sears (6-7) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a 7-0 victory over the Yankees. He struck out four.
Facing the team that traded him west back in 2022 as part of the Frankie Montas deal, Sears tossed 48 of 90 pitches for strikes, as he fell one out shy of his first quality start since May 4. Saturday's performance was a much-needed turnaround after he'd gone 1-5 with a 7.90 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB over his prior nine outings and 41 innings, but it may have come too late to save Sears' spot in the A's rotation -- in each of his last two trips to the mound, top prospect Jack Perkins has dazzled in long relief, and the duo may switch roles in the near future. Sears currently lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Giants.

Athletics' JP Sears: Suffers seventh loss
Rotowire
Sears (5-7) took the loss in Sunday's game against Cleveland. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings with five strikeouts.
The 29-year-old southpaw generated a solid 13 whiffs in this 92-pitch outing, as he bounced back after getting shelled by Houston in his last appearance. Sears managed to post his sixth start of the season without conceding a homer out of 16 total games started. Through 81 frames, Sears now sports a 5.44 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 63:19 K:BB while allowing 18 long balls. He currently lines up to make his next start versus his former club, the Yankees, on the road next weekend.

Athletics' JP Sears: Strikes out nine in no-decision
Rotowire
Sears allowed two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Angels. He struck out nine.
Sears was dominant early, allowing just two singles through five scoreless frames. However, he'd give up back-to-back base hits to start the sixth, both of whom would come around to score after the A's turned to the bullpen. After going six or more innings in three of his first four starts this season, Sears has gone seven outings without recording a quality start. Overall, the left-hander has a 5-5 record with a 5.08 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 58:14 K:BB across 14 starts (72.2 innings) this season. Sears is currently lined up to face the Astros at home in his next outing.

Athletics' JP Sears: Struggles mightily in fifth loss
Rotowire
Sears (4-5) took the loss Tuesday, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and one walk over 3.1 innings in an 11-1 loss to the Astros. He struck out one.
Sears was ambushed by the Astros, surrendering three home runs and failing to make it out of the fourth inning. The left-hander was off to a promising start through his first eight outings, posting a 2.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 45 innings. However, across his past three starts, the 29-year-old owns a 13.86 ERA and 2.27 WHIP in 12.1 innings. With his season numbers now up to a 5.18 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, Sears has been part of the problem for an Athletics rotation that ranks 27th in MLB with a 5.00 team ERA.

Athletics' JP Sears: Tagged for grand slam in loss
Rotowire
Sears (4-3) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over four innings to take the loss Friday versus the Giants.
Sears was fine through two innings, but he ran into trouble in the third. Wilmer Flores took him deep for a grand slam in that frame to finish a 10-pitch at-bat. The four runs allowed were a season high for Sears, and he's given up six homers over nine starts. The southpaw still has a respectable 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 38:10 K:BB across 49 innings despite this inefficient start. He's projected for a home start versus the Angels his next time out.

Athletics' JP Sears: Solid in no-decision
Rotowire
Sears did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out two.
Sears has held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts -- he's gone 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA in that span (23 innings). Overall, the 29-year-old left-hander sports a 2.93 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and an impressive 32:6 K:BB across seven starts (40 innings) to open the year. Sears will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Yankees.

Rotowire
Sears gave up one run over three innings with four strikeouts in Saturday's Cactus League win over Arizona. He has a 3.38 ERA with a 8:4 K:BB in eight innings this spring.
Sears looks to be in regular-season form as Opening Day approaches. He's locked in as the No. 3 starter for the A's after leading the team in innings and wins last season. While Sears isn't dominant (18.1 percent strikeout rate last season), he does features good control (6.5 percent walk rate).

Sears ended the season with four losses in his last five starts, allowing 17 runs across 29 innings in September. He recorded 13 quality starts in 32 outings this season, including six quality starts since the beginning of August. Athletics' JP Sears: Pitches well in no-decision
Rotowire
Sears allowed four hits and two walks while striking out one over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Tuesday.
Sears was given the start on short notice after Osvaldo Bido (wrist) landed on the injured list earlier in the day. It worked out well, as Sears turned in his first scoreless outing since July 30, though the Athletics' bullpen couldn't maintain the 2-0 lead Sears exited the game with after six frames. The southpaw lowered his ERA to 4.18 with a 1.19 WHIP and 123:43 K:BB through 163.2 innings over 29 starts this season. He's lined up to make his next start on the road versus the White Sox in what would be a highly favorable matchup.

Athletics' JP Sears: Cruises to 11th win
Rotowire
Sears (11-9) earned the win in Friday's 9-2 victory over Texas, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four.
The Oakland southpaw picked up his fifth win of the second half with this 97-pitch performance while earning his 11th quality start of the season. The only blemish on Sears' evening was a 406-foot solo homer allowed to Nathaniel Lowe in the second inning. The 28-year-old has been a solid contributor since the All-Star break, pitching to a 3.53 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 41:8 K:BB across 51 innings. Sears is scheduled to make his next start at home against the Mariners.

Athletics' JP Sears: Crumbles against Brew Crew
Rotowire
Sears (10-9) took the loss Friday, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk over 3.2 innings in an 11-3 loss to the Brewers. He struck out three.
The southpaw saw his four-game quality start streak end with a resounding thud, as Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz took him deep in a five-run second inning for Milwaukee. Sears has given up three runs or fewer in eight of his last 11 starts, but he's been hammered for at least seven runs in each of the other three -- volatility that has left him with a 4.50 ERA in 62 innings over that stretch despite a 1.18 WHIP and 58:10 K:BB. Sears will try to shake it off in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Cincinnati.
