  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Starts up throwing program

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Cabrera (hamstring) resumed a throwing program this weekend, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Cabrera is limited to playing catch, but after the Cubs came away encouraged by how his strained hamstring responded over the weekend, he could advance to throwing off a mound later this week before the team heads into the All-Star break. The right-hander probably won't be ready to return from the 15-day injured list immediately coming out of the break, but he'll have a shot at rejoining the Chicago rotation before the end of July if he steers clear of any setbacks with his hamstring while building back up.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Aiming for mound work before break

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that the goal is for Cabrera (hamstring) to be throwing bullpen sessions before the All-Star break, Casey Drottar of MLB.com reports. Cabrera landed on the 15-day injured list one week ago because of a moderate left hamstring strain. If Cabrera is able to resume mound work before the break, he would seem to have a chance to rejoin the Cubs' rotation before the end of July. However, the righty needs to check off a few boxes before a clearer timeline emerges.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Out with moderate hamstring strain

Cabrera was diagnosed with a moderate-grade left hamstring strain Wednesday following an MRI and is without a return timeline, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. The Cubs placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list prior to Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mets after the right-hander was carted off the field upon suffering the injury during his start in Tuesday's series opener. In addition to Cabrera, Ben Brown (neck) also landed on the IL on Wednesday, leaving an already injury-ravaged Chicago rotation in an even more depleted state. A clearer timeline for Cabrera's return should become available once he's made enough progress in his recovery to get back on the mound and take part in fielding and agility drills, but he looks safe to rule out through at least the All-Star break.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Officially lands on 15-day IL

The Cubs placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a strained left hamstring, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Cabrera injured his hamstring during Tuesday's start versus the Mets when he did the splits while extending to catch a throw to first base. He will undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of the strain. An update on Cabrera's timeline could be available later Wednesday.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Headed to injured list

The Cubs will place Cabrera on the injured list Wednesday with a strained left hamstring, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Cabrera did the splits while extending to catch a throw to first base in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game, straining his hamstring in the process. He's slated to undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of his injury, at which point the Cubs will have a better idea of how much time the 28-year-old will miss.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Carted off field

Cabrera was removed from Tuesday's game against the Mets with a left hamstring/adductor strain, Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Cabrera was hurt while extending to catch a throw to first base at the end of the fifth inning and appeared to be grabbing at his left thigh. He wasn't able to make it off the field by himself and had to leave the game in a cart. The Cubs will presumably send the right-hander in for imaging to determine the severity of his injury, and an update on his status could come after the game.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Cleared to start Tuesday

Cabrera (hand) is listed as the Cubs' probable starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Mets at Citi Field. Cabrera's inclusion on the Cubs' pitching schedule for their four-game series in New York indicates that he made it through his bullpen session over the weekend without issue. The 28-year-old was lifted in the fifth inning of his latest start Tuesday versus the Rockies due to right hand cramping, but he was able to make a swift recovery.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Exits with trainer

Cabrera was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rockies with a right hand cramp, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Cabrera made it through 4.1 innings Tuesday before one of the Cubs' trainers came out to the mound to look at his hand. The initial concern was that the 28-year-old was dealing with blisters -- something that's already caused him to spend time on the IL this season -- but he was instead pulled due to an unrelated issue. It's unlikely that his cramps will force him back onto the IL, but it's something the Cubs will presumably monitor leading up to his next start.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Rebounds for fourth victory

Cabrera (4-3) notched the win over Colorado on Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.1 innings. After being pounded by the Giants for eight runs over 3.2 frames in his first start back from the injured list in his previous outing, Cabrera looked better against the Rockies. The right-hander did give up two more homers, but they were both solo shots, and Colorado couldn't put any other runs on the board. Cabrera tossed 51 of 83 pitches for strikes and secured his first victory since April 28. The five long balls he's allowed across his past two appearances are certainly a concern, but Cabrera is lined up for a more promising matchup in his next start, which is scheduled to be a rematch against the Rockies -- this time in Chicago.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Activated ahead of Friday's start

The Cubs activated Cabrera (finger) from the 15-day injured list Friday. Cabrera will start Friday's game against the Giants after missing the past two weeks with a blister on his middle finger. The right-hander did not make a rehab start, so he could be relatively limited from a pitch count perspective. Cabrera holds a 4.00 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 47:20 K:BB across 54 innings in his first season with the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Returning Saturday

Cabrera (finger) will start Saturday's game against the Giants, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Cabrera landed on the injured list in late May with a blister on his right middle finger but is now slated to return to the Cubs' rotation following a near-minimum stay. The 28-year-old righty got off to a strong start this season but has struggled as of late, posting a 5.79 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across 18.2 innings (four starts) in May.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Resumes throwing off mound

Cabrera (finger) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Thursday and had been scheduled to throw off the mound Sunday with greater intensity, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs haven't confirmed that Cabrera was in fact able to throw again Sunday, but Montemurro notes that the right-hander was able to use his entire pitch mix during Thursday's session. Cabrera's ability to use his full arsenal suggests that the blister on his right middle finger isn't providing any complications with his off-speed pitches, so the 28-year-old looks like he could have a realistic chance at avoiding a rehab assignment and returning from the 15-day injured list this coming weekend when he's first eligible. If he's deemed ready to go for the Cubs' weekend series with the Giants, Cabrera would presumably replace Jordan Wicks as the team's fifth starter.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Leaves game with blister

Cabrera was removed from Wednesday's game against the Brewers with a blister on his right middle finger, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports. After allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters through three frames, Cabrera was taken out of Wednesday's contest following his first pitch of the fourth inning. It's unknown whether the 28-year-old righty will be ready to take the mound in time for his next turn through the rotation, but the Cubs will monitor the situation closely over the next several days.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Takes loss Saturday

Cabrera (3-1) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Rangers after allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk across five innings. He struck out six. This was Cabrera's worst outing of the season, and he's clearly trending in the wrong direction after suffering his first defeat of 2026. The right-hander began the season with 11.2 scoreless frames in his first two starts, but he's allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last six appearances. Cabrera, who gave up multiple homers Saturday for the third time in his last four starts, now has a 3.88 ERA across 46.1 innings this year. He lines up to make his next start against the crosstown White Sox.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Fans eight in quality start

Cabrera didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Reds, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight. Despite serving up a pair of homers Monday, the 28-year-old right-hander continues to provide the Cubs with length on a steady basis. Not only did Cabrera fan a season-high eight, but he worked at least five innings in his seventh straight start to open the year. While he has given up at least six hits and three runs in five consecutive outings, Cabrera will still take a solid 3.27 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 37:14 K:BB over 41.1 frames into his next scheduled appearance in Texas.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Moves to 3-0

Cabrera (3-0) earned the win over San Diego on Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings. Cabrera nearly notched a quality start, but he was pulled with two outs in the sixth inning, one batter after he gave up a run-scoring single. Nonetheless, the right-hander impressed with a whopping 20 whiffs while setting a season high with seven punchouts. Cabrera has given up exactly three earned runs in four straight starts, and he's completed at least five frames in each of those outings. In his first year with Chicago, Cabrera has proven to be an impactful addition to the rotation, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 29:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings while winning three of his six starts without yet taking a loss.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Goes seven innings vs. Phillies

Cabrera didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Phillies, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and no walks. He struck out five. Philadelphia's three-run seventh inning put a damper on what was otherwise an excellent start from Cabrera. The right-hander didn't walk a batter for the first time in a start this season while matching a season high with five strikeouts. Cabrera's ERA now sits at 2.73 with a 1.18 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB across five outings (29.2 innings). He's currently scheduled to face the Padres on the road his next time out.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Limits damage in no-decision

Cabrera came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Pirates, giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four. Things could have been much worse for the right-hander, as Pittsburgh also went 4-for-4 on stolen-base attempts against Cabrera and had runners in scoring position in every frame he was on the mound. He still exited the game after 98 pitches (62 strikes) in line for his first loss of the season, before the Cubs forced extras in the ninth against Dennis Santana. Cabrera will take a 1.62 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB through 16.2 innings into his next outing, which is set to come at home next weekend against the Mets.

  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Using fastball more

Cabrera is using his four-seam fastball more in spring training as a complement to his changeup, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Cabrera's changeup is his signature pitch, and he throws it often. However, the Cubs are asking the righty to throw his fastball more as a contrast to his off-speed stuff and to make the changeup more effective. Cabrera is throwing the four-seamer 30% of the time so far this spring, which is up from 13% during the 2025 regular season. He has good velocity on the pitch, averaging 96.7 mph last year, so he should be able to find success with the increased usage if his command is locked in. Cabrera was a key offseason trade acquisition for Chicago after posting a 3.53 ERA and 150 strikeouts across 137.2 innings for the Marlins in 2025.
... See More ... See Less
  • Cubs' Edward Cabrera: Impresses in spring debut

Cabrera struck out three batters across two perfect innings in Friday's Cactus League game against the Guardians. Making his spring training debut for the Cubs after getting traded over to the team in January, Cabrera looked sharp as he didn't allow any baserunners over his two innings of work. The righty can miss plenty of bats, as evidenced by his career 10.0 K/9, but he also has struggled with control at times and has a career 4.5 BB/9. Cabrera did manage a career-best 3.1 BB/9 in 2025 for the Marlins to go along with a 3.53 ERA, which was down from the 4.95 ERA he posted a year earlier. If the 27-year-old righty can continue to limit walks, he could be in store for a strong first season in Chicago.
