  • Red Sox's John Brebbia: Lands with Red Sox

Brebbia signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Brebbia entered free agency after being DFA'd by Atlanta on Monday, and he'll now give the Red Sox some organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A Worcester to close out the season. The 35-year-old righty won't be eligible to pitch in the postseason.

  • John Brebbia: Becomes free agent

Brebbia elected to become a free agent Wednesday. The veteran reliever cleared waivers after being removed from Atlanta's 40-man roster, and he's opted for free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. Brebbia has made 22 relief appearances between Detroit and Atlanta this season, posting a 7.71 ERA.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Dropped from 40-man roster

Atlanta designated Brebbia for assignment Monday. He'll give up his spot on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster to right-hander Alexis Diaz, whom Atlanta claimed off waivers from the Dodgers. After being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Aug. 29, Brebbia appeared in three games out of the Atlanta bullpen and surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Added to roster

Atlanta selected Brebbia's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. Brebbia posted a 1.89 ERA and 21:3 K:BB over 19 innings with Gwinnett after inking a minor-league contract with Atlanta in June. The veteran reliever holds an unsightly 7.71 ERA at the big-league level this season and will work in middle relief.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Latches on with Atlanta

Atlanta signed Brebbia to a minor-league contract Tuesday. Brebbia was released by the Tigers last week after collecting a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 18.2 innings. The 35-year-old finished last season with Atlanta, allowing two runs with a 9:2 K:BB over 6.2 frames. Brebbia will report to Triple-A Gwinnett for now but could get another opportunity in the majors sooner rather than later.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: DFA'd by Detroit

The Tigers designated Brebbia for assignment Sunday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The veteran right-hander has given up seven runs in his past four outings, and he's now lost his place on Detroit's 26-man active roster and 40-man roster. Brebbia has a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 18.2 innings this season and will now go through the waivers process.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Resumes throwing program

Brebbia (triceps) has resumed a throwing program, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Brebbia just landed on the 15-day injured list this past weekend with a right triceps strain, so it's a good sign that he's already playing catch. The reliever will be eligible for activation May 4, and it would seem he has a shot to be ready at that time.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Lands in Motor City

Brebbia signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Tigers on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. The 34-year-old's new contract also includes a $4 million club option for 2026. Brebbia had one of the worst years of his big-league career in 2024, accumulating a 5.86 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 55.1 regular-season innings between the White Sox and Atlanta. He has plenty of experience working in high-leverage situations, but the Tigers will likely keep him in a middle-relief role until he can demonstrate consistent success over an extended period of time.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Optioned to Triple-A

Atlanta optioned Brebbia to Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. After signing with Atlanta on Sept. 1, Brebbia surrendered two earned runs across 6.2 innings over five appearances -- a strong turnaround from the 6.29 ERA he held while with the White Sox. Despite his improvement, he'll be sent back to the minors in order to make room for Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), who was activated off the injured list to start Saturday against Kansas City.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Designated for assignment

The White Sox designated Brebbia for assignment Tuesday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports. The veteran right-hander filled a high-leverage role for Chicago this season and recorded two saves and 13 holds, but he hadn't been particularly effective with a 6.29 ERA in 54 outings. Brebbia posted a sub-4.00 ERA in five of his six MLB campaigns entering the season, so he could receive some interest from other teams.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Another tough outing

Brebbia (0-6) allowed three earned runs on one hit and one walk while recording one out to take the loss Monday against the Royals. Brebbia is the presumed closer in Chicago after Michael Kopech was dealt to the Dodgers on Monday. However, things didn't go as planned when he entered the game with a runner on first and a one-run lead, as he allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base -- one was hit by a pitch -- before serving up a game-winning grand slam to Bobby Witt. Brebbia has now allowed eight earned runs across his last five appearances -- spanning four innings -- so even if he does pick up rare save chances, he's likely to provide very poor ratios.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Blows save versus Rangers

Brebbia blew the save in Monday's 4-3 loss at Texas. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk with one strikeout in one inning. After Michael Kopech took over in the seventh inning and worked 1.2 frames, Brebbia was called upon to close out a one-run lead in the ninth. After inducing a Josh Smith flyout, the 34-year-old yielded a double to Wyatt Langford before Jonah Heim singled home Langford to tie the game and force extras. Brebbia has hit a rough patch lately, as he's yielded runs in three consecutive outings, allowing five earned across 2.2 innings. However, if Kopech is dealt at the July 30 trade deadline and Brebbia stays in Chicago, he could see more save chances down the stretch.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Implodes to take loss

Brebbia (0-5) allowed three earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out two to take the loss Sunday against the Royals. Brebbia began the season in poor form but entered Sunday's game having maintained a 1.40 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with a 28:4 K:BB across his past 19.1 innings. He has been one of the White Sox's top setup men in that span and has racked up eight holds. Michael Kopech appears to have a grip on the closer role for the team, but setting aside Sunday's tough outing, Brebbia has proven to be a reliable high-leverage option.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Activated from IL

The White Sox activated Brebbia (calf) from the 15-day injured list Monday. Brebbia wound up missing just over the minimum 15 days with a right calf strain. He should be used in high-leverage spots out of the White Sox bullpen but is probably well behind Michael Kopech in the pecking order for saves.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Set to begin rehab assignment

Brebbia (calf) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Brebbia is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list Sunday, and it would appear he could be back at that time if he can get through Friday's rehab appearance without any hiccups. The veteran reliever has been out the last two weeks with a right calf strain, which was an apparent aggravation of an injury he suffered back in February.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Out with calf strain

Brebbia was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday, retroactive to April 6, with a left calf strain. The right-hander exited his appearance Friday against the Royals with calf soreness and will be out for at least the next couple weeks after being diagnosed with a strain. Jordan Leasure and Steven Wilson could see more high-leverage spots in front of closer Michael Kopech while Brebbia is sidelined.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Works in setup role

Brebbia allowed two walks over one-third of an inning in Tuesday's win over Atlanta. Brebbia entered the game in the eighth inning and was tasked with protecting a one-run lead. He retired the first batter he faced before surrendering two free passes, after which he was pulled. Brebbia didn't help himself with the performance, but regardless of the results, his usage suggested he'll serve as the White Sox's primary setup man with Michael Kopech getting the chance to close.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Works ninth in 2024 debut

Brebbia pitched a perfect ninth inning in Saturday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Tigers. The 33-year-old right-hander was bothered by a calf strain early this spring, but Brebbia was able to make a couple Cactus League appearances late in camp and seems healthy to begin the season. He was viewed as a potential closing candidate in an unsettled White Sox bullpen heading into 2024, so his high-leverage usage Saturday is encouraging, but the better news for Brebbia's fantasy outlook might have been how manager Pedro Grifol has deployed his competition. Rookie Jordan Leasure worked the sixth Saturday and got a hold, while Michael Kopech pitched the eighth Thursday with the team down by a run.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Goes through drills

Brebbia (calf) went through fielding drills Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. It comes one day after Brebbia pitched an inning in a minor-league game. Fielding his position was how Brebbia strained his right calf back in late February, so it's a good sign that he got through it Wednesday with no apparent issues. However, the reliever's readiness for Opening Day remains very much in question.

  • White Sox's John Brebbia: Set to pitch in MiLB game Monday

Brebbia (calf) is scheduled to make a relief appearance Monday in a game at minor-league camp, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Brebbia still has yet to make his Cactus League debut, but he'll still be able to build up at minor-league camp Monday as he looks to secure his spot in the White Sox's Opening Day bullpen. Assuming Brebbia's right calf presents no further complications in Monday's outing or his subsequent spring appearances, he could find himself in a prominent role in the bullpen to begin the campaign. The White Sox have yet to anoint a closer since trading away Gregory Santos to the Mariners in February, and Brebbia represents one of the more battle-tested options in an otherwise green bullpen. In addition to Brebbia, hard-throwing 23-year-old Prelander Berroa (shoulder) and converted starting pitcher Michael Kopech are candidates to factor into the equation for saves.
