When healthy in 2025, Lawlar bounced around the Aces' infield, playing second base, shortstop and third base. Given the parent club's existing opening at the hot corner following its trade of Eugenio Suarez, Lawlar is expected to see most of his time at third base in preparation for his next call-up.

Lawlar has been sidelined since late June due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Now healthy, Lawlar will look to ramp things up at Reno before likely finishing the season back in the big leagues with the Diamondbacks. With Eugenio Suarez shipped off to Seattle at the trade deadline, Arizona will surely want to get Lawlar plenty of everyday looks to close out the season with an eye toward the 2026 campaign. Lawlar was overmatched in his previous stint in the majors during an eight-game stretch in May, as he failed to record a hit across 22 trips to the plate.

Lawlar earned a promotion to the big leagues May 12 after slashing .336/.413/.579 through 173 plate appearances in Triple-A. However, he failed to record a hit over 19 at-bats at the MLB level and never had a clear path to playing time with the Diamondbacks, so he'll head back to the minors. Ildemaro Vargas signed a major-league contract with Arizona on Thursday and will fill Lawlar's place on the active roster.

Lawlar came up through the system as a shortstop, but a position switch for the team's top prospect was signaled when the Diamondbacks extended shortstop Geraldo Perdomo this spring. Lawlar is currently riding a seven-game hit streak, during which he's 15-for-30 with five walks, two home runs, two triples, four doubles, 12 RBI, five steals and 10 runs scored. "He's driving the ball to all fields," Arizona farm director Chris Slivka told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "He's controlling his bats. He's getting more experience over there at second base, getting more familiarity with the position and the reads, the angles and double play turns. He's looked really good on both sides of the ball, so he's obviously trending in the right direction." That direction should eventually lead to the majors, but there isn't an obvious path to regular at-bats once second baseman Ketel Marte (hamstring) returns from injury. Lawlar has played some third base, which could be an option if Eugenio Suarez doesn't improve on his .690 OPS.

Lawlar was activated off the injured list this week and played his second game for Reno on Wednesday. With changes afoot on the Diamondbacks -- primary shortstop Geraldo Perdomo is off the IL, and manager Torey Lovullo said Blaze Alexander will see more time at third base in place of the slumping Eugenio Suarez -- it's logical to think about where Lawlar fits. "Lawlar has a huge future," Hazen said. "Where he's going to play (in the majors), I don't know. I think the challenge with Jordan right now is he had spring training and then he had six weeks of nothing, outside of what he's had recently on his rehab (assignment)."
