  • Reds' Chase Petty: Sent down after spot start

The Reds optioned Petty to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Petty made a spot start during Monday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. With Nick Lodolo (finger) due back from the injured list this weekend, Petty will rejoin the Louisville rotation.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Serviceable in spot start

Petty didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out one. Facing a formidable Cubs lineup, Petty held his own in a spot start during his season debut Monday. The 23-year-old right-hander fired 51 of his 75 pitches for strikes, but Seiya Suzuki did take him deep for a three-run home run in the fourth inning. The Reds are planning to get Nick Lodolo (finger) back from the injured list this weekend, therefore Petty's next start figures to come back with Triple-A Louisville.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Summoned ahead of Monday's start

The Reds recalled Petty from Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Petty will be the Reds' starting pitcher for Monday's contest versus the Cubs in place of the injured Brandon Williamson (shoulder). It is likely to be just a spot start, as the Reds are expected to get Nick Lodolo (finger) back from the injured list later this week. Petty has collected a 4.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB over 24.2 innings with Louisville this season.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: On track to start Monday

The Reds plan to call up Petty from Triple-A Louisville to start Monday's game against the Cubs in Chicago, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander will fill the rotation spot vacated by Brandon Williamson (shoulder), who was placed on the injured list Thursday. Petty's stint in the big leagues could be brief, however, as Nick Lodolo (finger) is on track to be activated from the IL next weekend. Over six starts with Louisville this season, Petty has submitted a 4.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB over 24.2 innings.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Could join big-league rotation

Petty struck out four batters and scattered two hits and three walks over 2.1 scoreless innings Wednesday in his start with Triple-A Louisville before exiting due to non-injury reasons, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Petty appears to have been removed early after Cincinnati starter Brandon Williamson was pulled from his start Wednesday against the Rockies due to left shoulder fatigue. Petty, who threw 62 pitches in his outing, could end up entering the Cincinnati rotation if Williamson is moved to the injured list or is otherwise unable to make his next turn. Petty holds a 4.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB across 24.2 frames at Triple-A this season.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Cut from major-league camp

The Reds optioned Petty to minor-league camp Monday. Petty was unscored upon in two Cactus League outings, collecting a 2:2 K:BB over four innings. There's no room in the Reds' rotation for the young right-hander, but Petty should play a role with the big club at some point this summer.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Doesn't pitch Saturday

Petty didn't pitch in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Guardians after being expected to operate as the primary pitcher. The right-hander was initially listed as Cincinnati's probable starter for Saturday, but the Reds made a late pivot and had Brent Suter open the game. Suter tossed three scoreless frames to lead off the game, but rather than turning to Petty after that, manager Terry Francona opted to have five other relievers finish out the win. The Reds will continue to have an opening in the rotation until Hunter Greene (groin) returns from the injured list, but Petty may not receive another start after getting lit up for 13 earned runs with a 7:8 K:BB in his first 5.1 big-league innings.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Following opener Saturday

Petty will pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Brent Suter against the Guardians on Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. Petty's first two major-league starts haven't quite gone according to plan, as he's allowed 13 earned runs in just 5.1 innings. The Reds will now see how the 22-year-old fares after following an opener, and he could continue to do so in his future turns through the rotation if his performance improves.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Call-up official for MLB debut

The Reds selected Petty's contract from Triple-A Louisville ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Cardinals in the second game of a doubleheader. Cincinnati is designating Petty as its 27th man for the twin bill, so he's expected to be returned to Louisville once the doubleheader concludes. The 22-year-old righty will be making his MLB debut Wednesday after turning in a 3.52 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB across 23 innings over his first five starts of the season at the Triple-A level.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Slated for MLB debut Wednesday

Petty will be called up from Triple-A Louisville to start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals in Cincinnati, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. The Reds and Cardinals were rained out Tuesday and will play a twin bill Wednesday. Petty, one of Cincinnati's top prospects, will make his MLB debut and serve as the club's 27th player on the roster. The 22-year-old right-hander is 0-2 with a 3.52 ERA with 27 strikeouts and nine walks over 23 innings in five starts for Louisville. Petty was dominant in his most recent start April 23, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out seven over six shutout innings. He'll likely be returned to Louisville after making his start Wednesday.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Shines against champs

Petty allowed one run on four hits and struck out four over three innings in Tuesday's split-squad start against the Dodgers. This was Petty's first Cactus League start -- he appeared twice previously out of the bullpen -- and the 2021 first-round draft pick held his own against the World Series champs, who brought a stacked lineup to the game. The right-hander's first pitch of the night was a 98.1 mph fastball to Shohei Ohtani -- the first of 21 pitches that registered at least 97 mph. He ended the night after 51 pitches, freezing Freddie Freeman with a slider. The lone blemish was a home run by Mookie Betts. Petty finished up 2024 at Triple-A Louisville and is expected to head back there to begin 2025.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Fans career-high nine batters

Petty struck out a career-high nine batters Tuesday for Double-A Chattanooga while allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks over five innings. Petty has a 5.81 ERA and 1.58 WHIP on the season, but he's got a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 20 innings over his last four starts, all of which have been five-inning starts for the 21-year-old righty. Known for his triple-digit fastball velocity as an amateur, Petty was only sitting in the 93-95 mph range while displaying pinpoint control last year. However, he worked on adding velocity in the offseason and has sat 96-98 mph with his fastball this year with an upper-80s slider. Petty is the third-youngest qualified starter at Double-A, behind Caden Dana and Robby Snelling.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Healthy at High-A

Petty (elbow) was activated from the 7-day injured list Saturday and gave up one earned run while striking out three over four innings in his return to action Wednesday for High-A Dayton. He missed a little over a month to start the season, but given that it was an elbow injury, it's excellent news that he still has a chance to have a pretty normal age-20 season. Petty was known more for his velocity entering the 2021 draft, but he's now more of a strike thrower who sits in the low 90s with his sinker and misses bats with his slider.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Climbs to High-A

The Reds promoted Petty from Single-A Daytona to High-A Dayton on Wednesday. Petty, who was the main piece the Reds received in the March trade that sent Sonny Gray to Minnesota, will advance to Dayton after he submitted a 3.18 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 60:23 K:BB across 65 innings with Daytona.
