  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Optioned down

The Red Sox optioned Murphy to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. Murphy threw three scoreless innings in Saturday's loss to Detroit, bringing his ERA and WHIP down to 3.12 and 1.18, respectively, over 34.2 innings with the big club this season. Jose De Leon was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move and will start the Red Sox's regular-season finale versus the Tigers. Murphy will likely stay active in case he's needed out of the bullpen at some point in the postseason.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Rejoins big-league bullpen

The Red Sox recalled Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Friday. Murphy was just optioned Wednesday but is eligible to be recalled since he's replacing an injured player in Brennan Bernardino (lat). He'll give manager Alex Cora a left-handed relief option.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Demoted to minors

The Red Sox optioned Murphy to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. Murphy pitched each of the previous two days, so he likely wouldn't have been available out of the bullpen for a day or two. He's being sent out in favor of Kyle Harrison, who was recalled from Triple-A and is expected to provide length out of the bullpen during Wednesday's series finale versus the Athletics.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Murphy to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Murphy spent the first three months on the injured list while completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery before being activated in late June. Over 14 appearances out of the Boston bullpen, Murphy submitted a 3.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB in 20.2 innings while being used mainly in lower-leverage spots. His demotion likely has less to do with his performance than it does Boston's desire to bring in a fresh arm, as Murphy had pitched three of the past five days while covering three innings in total. Boston called up left-hander Jovani Moran from Triple-A to replace Murphy in the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Mops up Saturday

Murphy walked two and struck out two over two scoreless innings in Saturday's 15-1 win over the Blue Jays. Murphy, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday, made his first appearance for the Red Sox since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2024. The southpaw will remain in a low-leverage role as he works off the rust.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Reinstated from IL

The Red Sox reinstated Murphy (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Murphy is ready to return to the the Red Sox's bullpen after fully recovering from April 2024 Tommy John surgery. He posted a 4.91 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 14.2 innings during his rehab assignment. In corresponding moves, Luis Guerrero (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list and Justin Slaten (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day IL.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Placed on 60-day IL

The Red Sox placed Murphy (elbow) on the 60-day injured list, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The transaction frees a spot on the 40-man roster. Murphy has been throwing off a mound and could be an option for the Red Sox by the time his 60 days are up, or close to that point. He's on the mend from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent April 10 of last year.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Throwing bullpens

Murphy (elbow) has thrown two bullpen sessions early this spring, Christopher Smith of MassLive reports. Murphy has thrown a 10-pitch and a 15-pitch bullpen this spring as he works his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last April. The southpaw missed all of last season due to the procedure after throwing 47.2 innings over 20 appearances out of the bullpen for the Red Sox as a rookie in 2023. Smith said Sunday that he's currently aiming to throw to live hitters April 10 and that there's a possibility he could be ready for game action during the first half of the campaign. He added that he's unsure what his role will be upon making it back to the big club, though Smith indicated a desire to be used in a multi-inning role, saying, "I feel like that's something that's going on in baseball now -- guys that can go two innings, guys that can go three innings. So have some utility."

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Begins throwing program

Murphy (elbow) began a throwing program last week, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Murphy had Tommy John surgery in April and has finally been cleared to begin throwing again. The left-hander is sure to begin next season on the injured list -- perhaps the 60-day IL -- but will hope to contribute out of Boston's bullpen eventually.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Returns to majors

Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox are swapping out Brandon Walter in favor of Murphy heading into Friday's weekend series in Toronto. The southpaw will provide the bullpen with some length after working at least three innings in three of his last four appearances at Triple-A.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Sent back to Triple-A

Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Murphy covered four innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, and with that kind of workload presumably making him unavailable for at least a couple days, the Red Sox decided to remove him from the roster and replace him with fellow reliever Kyle Barraclough, who was called up from Triple-A. Now that he's back with Worcester, Murphy should slide back into the rotation.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Makes return to Boston bullpen

The Red Sox recalled Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. He'll provide Boston with another left-handed option capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen for at least the next week after fellow lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino was placed on the COVID-19-related injured list Sunday. Murphy was optioned to Triple-A following Monday's loss to the Astros but hadn't made any appearances for Worcester since the demotion.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Fills bulk-relief role Sunday

Murphy allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out one without walking a batter over 3.1 innings Sunday versus the Giants. He did not factor in the decision. Murphy was ultimately the bulk reliever in the Red Sox's bullpen game, rather than Nick Pivetta. The 25-year-old Murphy didn't enter the game until the fourth inning, but he still delivered solid pitching, though he was never in line for the win. The southpaw is now at a 1.59 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB over 28.1 innings through nine relief appearances in the majors this season. Boston's rotation remains something of an enigma to project, but Murphy should be next be available for a bulk-relief outing over the upcoming weekend series at home versus the Blue Jays.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Earns first win

Murphy (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out three and picking up a win against the Mets. Murphy took on a bulk reliever role following Brennan Bernardino's 1.2 shutout frames to open the game. Murphy didn't allow a run until the sixth inning. The 25-year-old southpaw snagged his first career win while lowering his ERA to 1.80 through 25 career MLB innings.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Does well in bulk-relief role

Murphy allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six over 4.2 scoreless innings, taking a no-decision versus the Athletics on Tuesday. Opener Joe Jacques gave up all three runs on home runs in the second inning before Murphy entered for a bulk-relief assignment. While the deficit didn't get any worse, the Red Sox were unable to generate any support for Murphy. The southpaw has held his own as a multi-inning reliever this season, posting a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB over 21.1 innings through seven appearances. With three off days between now and the end of July, the Red Sox will likely be able to get by with their three starters and Nick Pivetta working in a bulk role for a while, so Murphy may be limited to mop-up duty.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Deployed in bulk relief Tuesday

Murphy tossed 3.2 innings out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Rangers, giving up one run on five hits and one walk while striking out one. Lefty Brennan Bernardino drew the start and covered 1.1 innings before the Red Sox turned the game over to five relievers to record the final 23 outs. Murphy ended up serving as the de facto bulk reliever, as none of Boston's other four bullpen arms notched more than four outs. Due to the depleted state of their rotation, the Red Sox don't have any obvious starting candidates for games Saturday or Sunday versus the Athletics, so there's a good chance that Murphy is called upon to cover multiple innings in one of those contests.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Throws two innings in loss

Murphy allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Marlins. Murphy pitched the eighth and ninth innings of what was a bullpen game for the Red Sox. The former starter has showed promise as a bulk reliever since transitioning to the bullpen in the minors at the beginning of the month. The Red Sox are rolling with three healthy starters and expect James Paxton (knee) to start Friday. Beyond that, the fifth spot in the rotation may be what was on display Wednesday, a combination of long relievers that features Murphy and Nick Pivetta. Both Tanner Houck (face) and Chris Sale (shoulder) are on the injured list.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Back in majors

The Red Sox recalled Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox sent Murphy down to Worcester immediately after he served as the 27th man in Sunday's doubleheader versus the Yankees, and now he'll return for his third MLB stint this season. Despite his 7.01 ERA in Triple-A, Murphy has been stellar in the majors -- he's thrown six scoreless frames while allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters. Brandon Walter was sent back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Optioned to Triple-A

Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Murphy served as the 27th man during Sunday's doubleheader versus the Yankees but is now headed back to the minors. The left-hander has spun six scoreless frames with eight strikeouts in the majors this season, so he has surely earned another opportunity at some point down the line.

  • Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Appointed as 27th man

Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday to serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the Yankees, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Murphy will give the Red Sox an extra arm in the bullpen for the twin bill against New York after Saturday's contest was postponed. In his MLB debut against Cleveland on June 8, the southpaw threw 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out five, but he's registered an unhealthy 7.01 ERA and 1.88 WHIP as a member of Worcester over his 43.2 frames.
