  • Royals' Michael Massey: Tallies four hits

Massey went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 9-2 victory over the Athletics. Massey capped the regular season swinging well, tying his season high with four hits -- his second four-hit effort in the past five games. Even with that strong finish, it's been a rough year for the utility man, who battled multiple injuries and struggled when on the field, slashing .244/.268/.313 with nine doubles, three homers and 20 RBI across 77 games.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: On bench Friday

Massey is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics. Massey will start Friday's game on the bench even as the Royals go up against a right-hander (Mason Barnett). Jonathan India will step in at second base and bat seventh.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Records second steal

Massey went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 9-4 win over the Angels. Massey hadn't been in the lineup since Saturday, with two of his three games out of the lineup coming against left-handed pitchers. The lefty-hitting second baseman has two multi-hit efforts over his last three games but looks set to end the year in a timeshare as the Royals also try to keep Adam Frazier and Jonathan India involved at the keystone. Massey has posted an uninspiring .233/.258/.300 slash line with three home runs, two steals, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored over 268 plate appearances this season.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Taking seat Sunday

Massey isn't in the Royals' starting lineup Sunday versus the Blue Jays. Massey will begin the series finale on the bench after starting each of Kansas City's past three contests at second base. Adam Frazier will cover the keystone Sunday.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Fuels offense in rout

Massey went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, a walk, three RBI and an additional run scored in Friday's 20-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Massey set a new career best by tallying four hits in this contest while driving home four for the fourth time. His performance was highlighted by a 393-foot, two-run blast off Toronto starter Max Scherzer in the opening frame. Massey, who is currently fills a bench role in Kansas City, is now slashing .231/.257/.300 with three homers, 19 RBI and 16 runs scored across 262 total plate appearances.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Idle against lefty again

Massey is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. The left-handed-hitting Massey will hit the bench for the second straight day while the Guardians send another lefty (Logan Allen) to the bump. Massey has played fairly regularly against right-handed pitching since he returned from the injured list Aug. 25, but he might have to settle for more of a part-time role after the Royals got Jonathan India back from the injured list Tuesday.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Makes return from IL

The Royals reinstated Massey (wrist/ankle/back) from the 10-day injured list Monday. Massey will make his return to the Royals for the first time since early June, after he was initially deactivated due to a left ankle sprain before being pulled off two separate rehab assignments on account of a fractured right wrist and a tight back. He began a third rehab assignment Aug. 9 and emerged from his two-week stint in the minors unscathed while slashing .245/.310/.415 with a pair of home runs in 12 games for Triple-A Omaha. With Kansas City optioning John Rave to Triple-A in a corresponding move, the left-handed-hitting Massey could be in line for a regular spot in the lineup versus righties, though he may eventually move to the bench on a more frequent basis once the Royals reinstate Jac Caglianone (hamstring) from the IL.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Enjoys productive weekend in minors

Massey (wrist/ankle/back) has slashed .245/.310/.415 with two home runs, three doubles and a 4:14 BB:K in 12 games since beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Aug. 9. Initially placed on the 10-day injured list June 10 due to a left ankle sprain, Massey then sustained a hairline fracture to his right wrist while rehabbing with Omaha in late June. He started up a new rehab assignment after the All-Star break, only to be shut down again when he developed back tightness. Now in the midst of his third rehab assignment, Massey is looking healthy and turned in a productive weekend with Omaha, going 4-for-14 with a pair of home runs and a double from Friday through Sunday. He's been rotating between second base and left field during his time in the minors and could contend for playing time at either position with the Royals once he's activated from the IL.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Three-hit performance in rehab

Massey (wrist/back/ankle) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored with Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Massey resumed his rehab assignment Saturday for a fractured right wrist and left ankle sprain after a setback caused by back tightness. He's looked sharp since returning, going 4-for-9 with two RBI over two games at Triple-A Omaha. It's been a frustrating recovery process for the utilityman, with multiple injuries piling up, and he was already scuffling at the plate before landing on the injured list June 10, slashing just .202/.221/.258 in 56 games for the Royals.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Battling back issues

Massey (wrist) was pulled off his rehab assignment due to a back injury, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Massey has already dealt with ankle and wrist problems this season, and his latest back issue will further delay his return from the injured list. He doesn't have a clear return timeline at the moment, but that may change once the Royals get a chance to evaluate him further.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Goes on IL with sprained ankle

The Royals placed Massey on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left ankle sprain. It's not clear when or how Massey was injured, but his playing time had already been trending downward with just two starts over the Royals' last six contests. Tyler Tolbert is taking his roster spot.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting versus righty

Massey is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. Most of Massey's absences this season have come against left-handed pitching, but he finds himself on the bench Friday against Chicago righty Davis Martin, who has reverse splits. Jac Caglianone will serve as the designated hitter while Drew Waters, Kyle Isbel and John Rave start from left to right in the outfield.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Battling left ankle soreness

Massey was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds due to left ankle soreness. Massey was removed from Wednesday's lineup after being listed as the team's starting left fielder. However, pain in his left ankle will prevent him from starting the contest. John Rave will enter the lineup in right field while Dairon Blanco slides to left. The Royals are off Thursday before starting a three-game series against the Tigers on Friday.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Pops second homer

Massey went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk and an additional run scored in Monday's 7-5 win against the Astros. The Kansas City second baseman took Houston starter Ryan Gusto deep in the second inning to open the game's scoring. Massey has finally shown signs of life over his last 10 games, batting .275 (11-for-40) with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored. Across 146 total plate appearances, the 27-year-old is slashing .213/.234/.294 with 13 RBI and 8 runs scored.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Taking Saturday off vs. LHP

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Heading to bench Wednesday

Massey is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. After going 1-for-20 at the dish while starting in each of the last five games, Massey will get a day off to clear his head. Tyler Tolbert will pick up his first career MLB start in place of Massey, covering second base while batting eighth.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Getting time at multiple positions

Massey has been playing left field this spring in addition to second base, but he is likely to split time at second base with Jonathan India, MLB.com reports. Massey is hitting .385 (10-for-26) this spring. India should be Kansas City's everyday leadoff hitter but could play several different positions. Massey should sit against most left-handed pitchers, and it's unclear if or when he'll play the outfield. That said, the added versatility can only help him stay in the lineup.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Out of lineup against southpaw

Massey is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Nationals. With southpaw Patrick Corbin toeing the rubber for the Nationals, the left-handed-hitting Massey will take a seat. Maikel Garcia is handling second base for the Royals in the series finale.
