  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Snags win out of bullpen

Buehler (9-7) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three over 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Friday versus the Diamondbacks. Buehler has won his first two outings with the Phillies, allowing one run over 8.2 innings with a 6:3 K:BB in that span. He worked in a piggyback start with Taijuan Walker, who allowed two runs over four innings to start the game. Buehler has a 5.13 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 90:58 K:BB across 121 innings through 25 appearances (23 starts) between the Phillies and the Red Sox this year. It's expected Buehler will start his last regular-season appearance before likely joining the bullpen for the playoffs. His outing next week has yet to be penciled in, but it will be at home against either the Marlins or the Twins depending on how the Phillies opt to order Buehler and Walker after this tandem outing.

  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Following Walker in piggyback start

Buehler will follow Taijuan Walker in a tandem start Friday in Arizona, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Aaron Nola will take the ball Saturday and Ranger Suarez will go Sunday for the Phillies. The rotation realignment not only sets up Cristopher Sanchez for the first game of the postseason, it also allows the club to get a look at Buehler in a different role, with the idea that he might be used in long relief in the playoffs. Buehler was solid in his Phillies debut last week against the Royals, striking out three over five innings of one-run ball. He'll have a better chance of picking up a win Friday as the second leg of a piggyback start.

  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Victorious in Phillies debut

Buehler (8-7) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over five innings against Kansas City. He struck out three. The veteran right-hander was assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after signing with the Phillies in late August, and he delivered one of his better starts of the season in his team debut after a tumultuous run in Boston. Buehler will be part of the Phillies' six-man rotation for the final weeks of the regular season, and Friday's showing was a good step toward potentially earning a spot on the playoff roster. His 5.29 ERA and 1.54 WHIP across 117.1 innings between Boston and Philadelphia remain unsightly, however.

  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Added to roster ahead of PHI debut

The Phillies selected Buehler's contract from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Buehler will start Friday's game against the Royals as the Phillies shift to a six-man rotation. The right-hander made one start at Lehigh Valley after being signed to a minor-league contract Aug. 31, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out five over three innings. He was released by the Red Sox last month after posting a 5.45 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 K:BB in 112.1 innings. The Phillies will take a look at the 31-year-old down the stretch to evaluate his capacity to help out their pitching staff in the playoffs.

  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Assigned to Triple-A

The Phillies officially signed Buehler to a minor-league contract Sunday and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Though Buehler's contract is a minor-league deal, it's likely just a formality so that the Phillies can avoid a move when the active roster expands from 26 to 28 men Monday. Since the veteran hurler officially joined the organization before the end of Sunday, he'll still be eligible for the postseason roster. Buehler will likely serve in a swingman role down the stretch while offering the Phillies an experienced arm with past postseason success.

  • Phillies' Walker Buehler: Finds home in Philly

Buehler agreed to a one-year contract with the Phillies on Sunday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Cut loose by the Red Sox earlier in the weekend, Buehler was able to quickly find work with another playoff-contending organization that was looking to bolster its starting depth. Though he owns a lifetime 3.56 ERA over parts of eight big-league seasons, Buehler languished during his time in Boston, submitting a 5.45 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 K:BB in 112.1 innings over 23 appearances (22 starts) before losing his spot on the roster. The 31-year-old boasts extensive playoff experience dating back to his time with the Dodgers, and the Phillies are hopeful that the right-hander can provide the pitching staff with a lift in September as the team potentially gears up for a deep postseason run. With Zack Wheeler (shoulder) recently getting shut down for the season, the Phillies have kept Taijuan Walker in the fold as their fifth starter and have received decent results from him, so Buehler won't necessarily be in store for a rotation spot right away with Philadelphia. Instead, he could head to the bullpen and serve as a long-relief option initially once the Phillies formally add him to their roster Monday.

  • Walker Buehler: Released by Red Sox

The Red Sox released Buehler on Friday, Chris Henrique of the Boston Sports Journal reports. Buehler was recently demoted to the bullpen and has now been cut loose by Boston after stumbling to a 5.45 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 K:BB over 112.1 innings covering 23 appearances (22 starts). The Red Sox will be responsible for what remains of his $18.05 million salary, as well as a $3 million buyout on his 2026 option. Buehler simply hasn't been the same pitcher since his second Tommy John surgery, holding a 5.42 ERA and 17.4 percent strikeout rate since the beginning of the 2024 season.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Officially moved to bullpen

Red Sox manager Alex Cora relayed Friday that Buehler will be moved from the rotation to the bullpen, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Buehler has struggled in his first season in Boston, posting a 7-7 record across 22 starts with a 5.40 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 82:54 K:BB across 110 innings. The veteran right-hander will likely be used in long relief out of the bullpen and will help fortify the depth with Justin Slaten (shoulder), Luis Guerrero (elbow), Josh Winckowski (elbow) and Liam Hendriks (hip) all on the 60-day injured list. Buehler was originally slated to start against the Orioles on Monday, but Cora has yet to name a starter in Buehler's stead. Per Cotillo, Richard Fitts and Kyle Harrison are the leading candidates to fill in as Monday's starter.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Control issues persist

Buehler didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Baltimore, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks across four innings. He struck out four. Buehler has struggled to locate pitches this season, and those issues have been exaggerated recently. He has more walks than strikeouts across his last five starts, and he's posted a 4.32 ERA along with a 15:18 K:BB across 25 innings during that stretch. Buehler hasn't struck out more than four batters in 11 consecutive outings. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Orioles early next week.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Blanks Friars for seventh win

Buehler (7-6) picked up the win Friday, allowing four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 10-2 rout of the Padres. He struck out four. A four-run fourth inning by the Red Sox gave Buehler all the offensive support he would need, as the right-hander tossed 60 of 96 pitches for strikes en route to his first win since July 5 and his seventh quality start of the season. Buehler has been inconsistent all year, but he's been able to limit the damage of late. He hasn't given up more than three runs in an outing since the beginning of July, posting a 3.27 ERA over his last 33 innings despite an ugly 1.52 WHIP and 16:14 K:BB. His luck could run out in his next start, however, which lines up to come on the road next week in Houston.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: No-decision vs. former team

Buehler did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Buehler's final line certainly could have looked a lot worse, as the right-hander struggled again with his command -- Buehler's issued 23 walks over just 34 innings in his last seven starts. His ERA now sits at a subpar 5.72 on the year with a 1.54 WHIP and 71:41 K:BB across 18 starts (89.2 innings). Buehler is currently lined up to face the Astros at home in his next outing.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Quality start against Rays

Buehler took a no-decision Thursday against the Rays, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out two. Thursday marked the first time that Buehler had thrown at least six innings since June 11, giving the right-hander his fifth quality start of 2025. He's punched out fewer than four batters in each of his last five appearances, and he's walked at least three in four of those five starts. Buehler has had a disappointing campaign so far, as his 6.12 ERA and 1.56 WHIP through 78 frames would be career worsts if they stand. He'll remain difficult to trust from a fantasy perspective coming out of the All-Star break.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Rebounds for sixth win

Buehler (6-6) earned the win Saturday in Washington, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks over five innings. He struck out two. Buehler certainly wasn't dominant, as he induced just seven whiffs on 100 pitches (65 strikes) and tied a season low in strikeouts, but the two earned runs allowed are his best mark since May 25. The veteran right-hander entered Saturday's contest having walked 14 batters across his prior three outings, and it was just his second start of the season issuing no free passes. Despite the bounce-back performance, Buehler's 6.25 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 15 starts this year don't inspire much confidence.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Expected to make next start

Buehler is expected to make his next start scheduled for Saturday against the Nationals, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. "He's scheduled to make his next one," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He's healthy, eager to work and like I said yesterday, he feels like he's getting close to finding it." Buehler had another challenging outing Sunday, when he was unable to go longer than four innings for a third consecutive start. He now owns a 6.45 ERA through 14 starts and will remain in the rotation for at least one more turn. Injuries currently leave the team light on starting depth, but newcomer Kyle Harrison, Hunter Dobbins (elbow) and Tanner Houck (elbow) are potential replacements.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Issues seven walks Monday

Buehler gave up five runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Monday. Buehler couldn't harness his control in the outing, throwing just 46 of 94 pitches for strikes and handing out a career-high seven free passes. Four of those walks came in the first inning, when Buehler also hit two batters and gave up all five of the runs on his line. The veteran right-hander has had a terrible June, posting an 11.57 ERA with a 14:14 K:BB through four starts spanning 16.1 frames. That's pushed his season ERA up to an ugly 6.29, and it's fair to wonder if Boston will intervene and try to find a way to get him back on track.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Shelled in fifth loss Tuesday

Buehler (5-5) was saddled with the loss Tuesday against the Mariners, giving up eight runs on eight hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out two. Buehler was shelled for a season-worst eight runs after matching his season high in innings pitched his last time out, and the four walks also represented a season worst. The 30-year-old right-hander generated 12 whiffs but fanned just two, and he's now surrendered at least one homer in nine of his 12 outings this year. Buehler owns a rough 5.95 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB over 59 innings during his first year with Boston, making him difficult to trust in his next scheduled appearance against the Angels.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Allows five runs in loss

Buehler (4-3) took the loss against Atlanta on Saturday, allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings. He was primarily hurt by two long balls in the fourth inning, including a two-run blast off the bat of Ronald Acuna. Acuna managed just nine swinging strikes on 106 pitches, snapping a streak of six consecutive starts yielding three earned runs or fewer. The 30-year-old will bring a 4.44 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 42:15 K:BB over 46.2 innings into a tough road matchup with the Yankees next weekend.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Decent in loss

Buehler (4-2) took the loss Sunday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three. Buehler managed to make it through five innings after he was ejected in the third in his last start. The right-hander pitched well, allowing just a pair of runs, but the Red Sox failed to generate much offensively against Dean Kremer in an eventual 5-1 defeat. Buehler's ERA sits at 3.95 with a 1.20 WHIP and 36:13 K:BB across eight starts (41 innings) this season. He's currently in line for a road matchup in Atlanta in his next outing.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Ejected in return from IL

Buehler didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Mets, walking two batters and striking out four over 2.1 scoreless, no-hit innings before being ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes. The right-hander was looking good in his first big-league outing since April 26, racking up 16 called or swinging strikes among his 52 pitches, but it was a call Buehler didn't get against Juan Soto that brought his night to an abrupt end. The important takeaway from the performance was that Buehler's shoulder seemed healthy. He sports a 4.00 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB through 36 innings on the season, and he'll look to keep his emotions in check in his next start, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Orioles.

  • Red Sox's Walker Buehler: Back from IL for Tuesday's start

The Red Sox activated Buehler (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Buehler last pitched April 26 but is back to start Tuesday's game against the Mets. On the season, Buehler is 4-1 with a 4.28 ERA and 29:9 K:BB across 33.2 innings. He'll face a tough test against a Mets team that is ninth in OPS against right-handed pitching this season.
