  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Drives in five in win

McGuire went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, a walk, five total RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 12-1 win over the Angels. McGuire stretched the Cubs' lead to 6-0 with his grand slam in the fourth inning, and he added another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The catcher entered Saturday just 1-for-14 with one RBI over seven games in August. Overall, he's at a .223/.250/.457 slash line with seven homers, 21 RBI, 15 runs scored and one double across 101 plate appearances this season.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Drawing start for day game

McGuire will start at catcher and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Brewers. Carson Kelly caught all nine innings of the Cubs' 4-3 win Wednesday night, so he'll get a breather for Thursday's matinee and give way to McGuire behind the plate. McGuire looked to be at risk at losing out on the top backup catcher role when Miguel Amaya was activated from the 60-day injured list Aug. 12 after a lengthy absence due to an oblique injury, but Amaya sustained a sprained left ankle in his first game back in action and went back on the IL two days later.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Racks up season-high four RBI

McGuire went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's 12-5 loss to the White Sox. McGuire blasted homer No. 6 on the season, racking up a season-high three hits and four RBI in the process. The 30-year-old backstop has played rather sparingly as Carson Kelly's backup behind the plate, but the former has been quite useful when the latter has needed a day off amid Miguel Amaya's (oblique) absence. Through 23 outings, McGuire is hitting .243 with six homers, one double and 15 RBI covering 74 at-bats.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Drives in two Sunday

McGuire went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in Sunday's 11-0 win over the Cardinals McGuire picked up a start in place of Carson Kelly in the series finale, and the former delivered his first multi-hit performance since June 10. While McGuire is batting just .237 with a .262 on-base percentage, he has provided some degree of fantasy utility by tallying five home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in only 18 games so far this season, though his ceiling is certainly limited due to his backup role. The veteran catcher is best viewed as a DFS dart throw on days when he's in the lineup.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Goes deep again in easy win

McGuire went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Cardinals. McGuire is making the most out of his playing time as Chicago's backup catcher, as he now has five home runs in only 14 games this season. For comparison, he hit just three long balls last year in 53 games for Boston and only one home run the year before that across 72 games. McGuire will likely be squeezed off the roster when Miguel Amaya (oblique) returns in the coming weeks, but for now, the former remains an intriguing DFS bargain option on days that he's in the lineup.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Goes deep in loss

McGuire went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 14-6 loss to the Mariners. Starting for a resting Carson Kelly, McGuire continued to serve as a very capable backup catcher. The veteran has gone deep four times already in only 12 games, helping push his OPS to .883. McGuire's career high in home runs is five, which he recorded across 30 games for the Blue Jays back in 2019. He may ultimately get bumped from the roster whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list, but McGuire is at least providing some short-term fantasy value on days when he's in the lineup.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Starting Friday

McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Friday's game against the Pirates. Carson Kelly, who is mired in a 4-for-37 slump, is getting the Friday afternoon contest off. McGuire has been hot lately, going 5-for-12 with a double and two RBI across his last three games, but he gets a tricky matchup against Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: Starting Thursday

McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Thursday's game against the Nationals. McGuire will pick up his first start since Sunday as Carson Kelly gets a breather. McGuire launched two home runs in his first game of the year back on May 25, but he's gone 0-for-9 with three strikeouts across three games since then. The veteran catcher doesn't have a ton of fantasy value as long as Kelly is healthy, and McGuire will likely be moved off the MLB roster entirely whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list.

  • Cubs' Reese McGuire: MiLB deal from Northsiders

The Cubs signed McGuire to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports. McGuire, who will turn 30 in March, sports a career .252/.300/.364 batting line over parts of seven major-league seasons. The veteran backstop will likely begin the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Iowa as catching depth.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Outrighted to Worcester

McGuire cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. McGuire was DFA'd by Boston to make room on the roster for the acquisition of catcher Danny Jansen, but the former will stay within the organization. Before being jettisoned from the 40-man roster, McGuire was slashing .209/.280/.295 with three home runs and 18 RBI across 158 major-league plate appearances this season.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: DFA'd by Boston

The Red Sox designated McGuire for assignment Sunday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. The 29-year-old will be bumped off the 26-man active roster and 40-man roster to make room for trade acquisition Danny Jansen, who will replace McGuire as Boston's new No. 2 catcher. McGuire posted a .209/.280/.295 slash line with three home runs in 52 games for the Red Sox this season.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Getting second straight start

McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. McGuire will be rewarded with a second straight start to close out of the Red Sox's pre-All-Star-break schedule after he went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 5-0 win. Though he's delivered two-hit performances in both of his last two starts, McGuire is still the clear No. 2 option at catcher behind Connor Wong, who holds a 204-point edge in OPS (.812 to .608) on the season.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Starts with Wong on paternity list

McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Blue Jays. McGuire will make the first of what will likely be two or three starts versus Toronto after the Red Sox placed top backstop Connor Wong (personal) on the paternity list Monday. Assuming Wong is away from the Red Sox for the maximum three games, McGuire will presumably move back into the No. 2 role following Thursday's team off day. The Red Sox called up Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Worcester to provide an insurance option at catcher behind McGuire while Wong is on paternity leave.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Breaks home-run drought

McGuire went 2-for-3 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays. McGuire went yard in the ninth inning off Erasmo Ramirez, marking the catchers' third homer of the season and his first since April 7. McGuire has been operating as the backup to Connor Wong in May, and he hasn't shown enough at the plate to warrant more playing time since, batting .214 with Tuesday's long ball being his only extra-base hit during the month.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Losing work to Wong

McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The lefty-hitting McGuire will take a seat against right-hander Carlos Carrasco and looks to have moved into a pure No. 2 role at catcher behind the righty-hitting Connor Wong, after McGuire had previously been occupying the strong side of a platoon. McGuire is on the bench for the third game in a row and for the second straight day against a right-hander, with the downturn in playing time coming while he's batted just .167 over his last nine games.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Out of Friday's lineup

McGuire is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Manager Alex Cora continue to split playing time behind the plate relatively evenly, with Connor Wong receiving the start Friday. McGuire has scuffled offensively over his past six games, going 3-for-16 with six strikeouts.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Sitting Wednesday

McGuire isn't in Boston's lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. McGuire is just 2-for-13 across his last five games, so he'll sit out Wednesday while Connor Wong starts behind the plate and bats sixth.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Idle against lefty

McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The lefty-hitting McGuire will exit the starting nine while the Angels bring southpaw Tyler Anderson to the bump in the series finale. Connor Wong will replace McGuire behind the dish.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Homers, swipes bag

McGuire went 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBI, a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Angels. McGuire filled the stat sheet Sunday, highlighted by his three-run blast in the sixth inning. He's gone deep twice in the last three games and posted his second multi-hit game of the season. The 29-year-old catcher is slashing .333/.385/.625 with three extra-base hits and eight RBI through nine games.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Making another start

McGuire will be at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game versus the Athletics, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. After yielding to Connor Wong in two of the first three games, McGuire has now started three of the last four contests. While it's not surprising Boston's catching situation has been a timeshare, it's a bit of a surprise it has leaned in McGuire's favor thus far. McGuire is off to a 5-for-12 start at the dish.
