With a 7 percent ownership rate in CBSSports.com leagues heading into his second major league start for the Twins, Yohan Pino clearly still has his share of skeptics. After a seven-inning debut against the White Sox in which he allowed just two runs, it may seem like Pino should be enjoying more popularity, but he may actually be overowned.
Pino put up great stats (9-1, 1.92 ERA, 0.93 WHIP) at Triple-A Rochester this season, thus earning a promotion. A .222 BABIP went a long way towards building those stats, and Pino also stranded more than nine out of every 10 baserunners (per FanGraphs.com), and he is very unlikely to repeat those feats at any level. Meanwhile, Pino doesn't have a history of getting swings-and-misses at a high rate, but he has established himself as a flyball pitcher who could be prone to allowing home runs.
The 30-year-old could be due for a rude awakening, beginning with his Wednesday start against the hard-hitting Angels. Not only should daily leaguers and AL-only owners bear this in mind, but as I mentioned in a recent blog post, Pino may not have much time to prove himself, as Trevor May and Alex Meyer have been pitching well enough to deserve a promotion as well. With those two prospects knocking on the door, Pino doesn't have much room for error.
