Armstrong with a quick first inning
The TBS broadcast just noted Shawn Armstrong is pitching on back-to-back-to-back days for the first time since 2017. Sheesh. He threw seven pitches in a 1-2-3 first inning. It's 0-0 going to the second.

The Tampa Bay Rays can clinch a World Series date with the Brewers with a win on Monday night, while the Cleveland Guardians are trying to stave off elimination and force a do-or-die Game 7.
Freddy Peralta, fresh off six scoreless innings in Game 2 and a brief relief appearance in Game 4, will take the mound as the ALCS returns to St. Petersburg, eager to continue his turnaround after a midseason trade from the Mets to the Rays. The Guardians will run out a bullpen game, with Shawn Armstrong listed as the starter. That means Cleveland's relievers, some elite, some not, will be relied upon heavily if they want to continue their season past Monday night.

Tim Herrin is already warming up as Shawn Armstrong throws a first pitch slider to Yandy Díaz for a called strike.
It's worth monitoring how efficient Peralta is after getting very limited work on Saturday, especially since the Rays would love to not completely empty their bullpen in this one.
Steven Kwan opened the game with a leadoff single off Taylor Walls' glove at shortstop. The next three batters made three outs on eight total pitches.

Freddy Peralta's first pitch is a fastball above the zone for a ball to Steven Kwan. The Rays are one win away from the World Series.
Rays are wearing their Devil Rays uniforms, which are the correct uniforms.
Ironically, Cleveland had the most stable rotation in baseball during the regular season. They were the only team to have four pitchers made 30 starts (Tanner Bibee, Joey Cantillo, Parker Messick, Gavin Williams), and they used only eight starters all year. Bibee, Cantillo, Messick, Williams, and Slade Cecconi were in the Opening Day rotation; Foster Griffin came over at the trade deadline; Daniel Espino made three starts as an opener; and Logan Allen made two starts during doubleheaders.
Now, with their season on the line, the Guardians are going with a straight bullpen game. Go figure. (I have a hard time seeing how they can get through Game 6 tonight with Bibee giving them a few innings.)
Rays manager Kevin Cash has had a few opportunities to use closer Bryan Baker for a four-out save this postseason, including in Game 5 (Tyler Wells came in to face José Ramírez as the tying run with two outs in the eighth), but has declined to do so. This looks like the reason why:
AVERAGE FASTBALL BY MONTH
April: 97.0 mph
May: 97.2 mph
June: 97.5 mph
July: 96.2 mph
August: 96.0 mph
September: 94.5 mph
October: 94.0 mph
The undersells things too. Baker's fastball averaged 94.8 mph in the ALDS and it's down to 93.5 mph in the ALCS. He didn't throw a pitch over 92.2 mph in Game 4 even though he had the three previous days off. This is definitely something to watch moving forward. Even if the Rays win Game 6 in a blowout and don't need Baker, the velocity question will carry over into the World Series.
Rather than go back to Gavin Williams on short rest, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt is stuck with a bullpen game for Game 6. Shawn Armstrong, who has yet to give up an earned run in 7 ⅔ postseason innings this year, will get the ball first. Behind him, well, your guess is as good as mine. Tanner Bibee has yet to be used, but at this point, that feels intentional rather than bad timing. Could Joey Cantillo eat some innings? Vogt is running out of arms.
When Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns traded for Freddy Peralta in the offseason, it was with the idea of bringing the pitcher he had watched for years with the Brewers into the rotation of the would-be World Series contenders. By the trade deadline, it was clear that the Mets were far from that -- and Peralta was a big reason why. In 2022 starts with New York, Peralta went 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA and the lowest ERA+ of his career.
So when the Rays acquired him at the trade deadline, the question was obvious: can they do it again? Can they win another trade? Can they work more magic? In 10 starts, he went 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA. He's been even better in the playoffs: two starts and a relief appearance with just one run allowed. The answer to all of those questions appears to be "yes."
"He's been as good as any pitcher in baseball in the month of September," Rays manager Kevin Cash said on Monday. " ... And then in this postseason, it's been pretty dominating, the fastball change-up combination, commanding the fastball where it needs to be, and then the occasional dropping in some spin early on in counts or when bats lengthen out.
"But Freddy's pitching with a lot of confidence, rightfully so because he's been so good."
The Rays are one win away from the World Series, but slugger Yandy Díaz isn't letting the pressure get to him:
"It all ends tomorrow," he said on Sunday after the Game 5 win. "We're going to win tomorrow."
