Vikings' Carson Wentz: Returning to backup role

Carson Wentz will serve as the Minnesota Vikings' backup quarterback Sunday against the Buccaneers after head coach Kevin O'Connell announced Monday that Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and will start Week 3.Wentz performed admirably across nearly two full games in relief of Murray, who sustained the concussion midway through the first quarter of the season opener against the Packers. After completing 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' come-from-behind 39-22 win over Green Bay, Wentz started Week 2 against the Bears and played turnover-free football in rainy and windy conditions en route to leading Minnesota to a 9-3 win. While Murray will reclaim the starting job now that he's out of the protocol, Wentz's performance over the past two weeks firmly solidifies him ahead of 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy on the depth chart.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Can't overcome weather in Chicago

Carson Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Bears. He added six yards on three carries.Neither team reached 200 passing yards on a wet and windy day at Soldier Field, so Wentz had no real opportunity to build on his impressive performance last week in relief of Kyler Murray (concussion), when he threw three TDs. Murray could clear the concussion protocol in time to re-take the reins of the offense in Week 3, returning Wentz to the bench for a road trip to Tampa Bay after he led the Minnesota Vikings to a 2-0 start to the season.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Will start Sunday at Chicago

Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Carson Wentz will be the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback Sunday at Chicago with Kyler Murray (concussion) ruled out for that contest.Wentz stepped in for Murray 12 plays into this past Sunday's game against the Packers and helped guide the Vikings to a 39-22 win, but the former completed 12 of 19 passes for just 133 yards. Wentz did toss three touchdowns -- 39 and nine yards to Justin Jefferson, 16 yards to T.J. Hockenson -- but otherwise he managed the game and didn't commit a turnover. O'Connell relayed to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com that he expects Murray to clear the concussion protocol next week, so Sunday's nod could be Wentz's last for some time.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: To start if Murray unavailable

Carson Wentz "is likely to start" Sunday against the Bears if Kyler Murray does not clear concussion protocol, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.Wentz was named the backup quarterback last week and led the Minnesota Vikings to a Week 1 comeback victory over the Packers, so although fellow reserve J.J. McCarthy would also be an option, Wentz appears to be the favorite to get the nod should Murray be unable to go.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Throws three TDs after Murray injury

Carson Wentz completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns after replacing Kyler Murray (concussion) in the first quarter of Sunday's 39-22 win over the Packers. Wentz also rushed five times for minus-1 yard and threw a successful two-point conversion.Wentz was ready to play after Murray's first-quarter exit, and the veteran backup orchestrated an impressive comeback, during which the Minnesota Vikings scored 22 unanswered fourth-quarter points. Wentz connected with Justin Jefferson for a 39-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth, sandwiched around a 16-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson in the third quarter. If Murray doesn't clear concussion protocol in time to face the Bears on the road in Week 2, Wentz would presumably be tabbed for the start over J.J. McCarthy.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Opening season as QB2

Coach Kevin O'Connell announced Wednesday that Carson Wentz will serve as Kyler Murray's backup for Sunday's game against the Packers.Wentz gets the QB2 nod over J.J. McCarthy, who will likely be inactive as the emergency third quarterback. O'Connell said this will be a week-to-week thing. Murray is expected to have a long leash as the Minnesota Vikings' starter this season.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: May have leg up on McCarthy

Carson Wentz completed three of four passes for 15 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and ran once for no gain in Friday's 34-6 preseason loss to the Broncos. He also fumbled once but recovered. The battle for the Minnesota Vikings' No. 2 quarterback job has been a fluid situation this summer, and J.J. McCarthy's absence Friday due to an ankle injury only served to add further intrigue. Wentz had already forced head coach Kevin O'Connell to modify his stance on the role being McCarthy's by going 18-for-25 for 173 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions over his first two preseason games, and McCarthy hurt his own cause in the second exhibition by missing two open receivers for potential touchdowns. Wentz drew the start in McCarthy's absence against Denver on Friday, and in a perhaps telling sign, was protected from injury by playing on only the first two drives.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Steady in Saturday's preseason loss

Carson Wentz completed nine of 11 passes for 92 yards during the Minnesota Vikings' 13-3 preseason loss to the Ravens on Saturday.J.J. McCarthy (undisclosed) served as the Vikings' starter for Saturday's game, with Wentz taking over under center in the second quarter. Wentz led two offensive series in the frame, with the latter being an eight-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a 52-yard field goal from Will Reichard as time expired, which were the only points the Vikings put up in Saturday's loss. Kyler Murray was named as Minnesota's QB1 earlier in August, but given McCarthy's shaky play in the team's first two preseason games, Wentz has a real chance of being named the team's backup quarterback for the regular season. The Vikings wrap up their preseason Friday against the Broncos.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Headed back to Minnesota

Carson Wentz (shoulder) signed a contract with Minnesota on Thursday, Rob Kleifield of the Minnesota Vikings' official site reports.Wentz will return to Minnesota for a second season, adding depth to a quarterback room that already includes the recently-signed Kyler Murray as well as holdovers J.J. McCarthy (hand) and Max Brosmer. Murray and McCarthy will likely be competing for the starting job throughout training camp and the preseason, but if the Vikings were to trade McCarthy prior to Week 1, Wentz could open the 2026 campaign in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in late October, Wentz made five starts in place of an injured McCarthy during the 2025 season, completing 110 of 169 pass attempts (65.1 percent) for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 57 yards on 11 carries. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network relays that Wentz has since recovered from surgery, so the 33-year-old should be a full participant for the Vikings' offseason program.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Slated for season-ending surgery

Carson Wentz is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to address his left shoulder injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.Wentz played the majority of snaps in Minnesota's last five games with J.J. McCarthy (ankle) working his way back from a multi-week injury, but the veteran was clearly playing through pain during last Thursday's 37-10 loss to the Chargers. Per Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Minnesota Vikings have officially placed Wentz on IR. The transaction confirms that McCarthy will start Sunday's road matchup against the Lions, if healthy, and leaves Max Brosmer in position to handle No. 2 quarterback duties for Minnesota.
