Jets' Geno Smith: Jets add talent to passing game

Geno Smith gained two key targets Thursday, as the New York Jets drafted tight end Kenyon Sadiq 16th overall and wide receiver Omar Cooper 30th overall, Mitch Sherman and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic report.Smith was acquired in the offseason to take over as the starting quarterback for a Jets offense that lacked playmakers in the passing game, as Garrett Wilson led the team with 395 receiving yards in 2025 despite being limited to seven games by a knee injury. The Jets are expected to get a healthy Wilson back in 2026 and now boast two additional first-round talents among their pass catchers in Sadiq out of Oregon and Cooper from Indiana. The 35-year-old Smith has thrown 90 touchdown passes over the past four regular seasons, with three of those campaigns coming in Seattle before he played for the Raiders in 2025.

Jets' Geno Smith: Set to be QB1 in New York

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn said in an interview with NFL Network there's "no doubt about it" that Geno Smith will be the team's starting quarterback.Smith was traded from Las Vegas to New York on March 10, when Justin Fields (knee) still was on the roster following an injury-shortened season as the Jets' starting quarterback. Fields then was dealt to the Chiefs on March 16, leaving Smith as easily the most experienced QB on the Jets' roster ahead of Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook. Glenn also said in his interview about Smith, "It means to have a bona fide starter come in and lead this offense to where it needs to go." During his lone season with the Raiders, Smith completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,025 yards and a 19:17 TD:INT. That was the third-worst TD:INT of the 35-year-old's career, behind only his first two seasons when he previously started for the Jets in 2013 and 2014. Smith was a journeyman backup before finally getting another chance to be the starting quarterback for the Seahawks from 2022 to 2024. He totaled 71 touchdowns to 35 interceptions as the starter in Seattle, and he completed at least 65 percent of his passes in each season as the QB1.

Jets' Geno Smith: Joining Jets via trade

The New York Jets have agreed to a trade with the Raiders to acquire Geno Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The next chapter of Smith's career will feature his return to the team that selected him in the second round of the 2013 Draft. Of course, it wasn't until his stint as a starter with Seattle from 2022-24 that Smith finally blossomed, earning two Pro Bowl berths and throwing for over 4,000 yards on two occasions. The 35-year-old signal-caller fell to earth while playing behind Las Vegas' porous offensive line in 2025, but the Jets hope the veteran can find his footing again in New York, where he will benefit not only from superior protection behind a line anchored by tackles Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou, but also a pair of valuable offensive playmakers in WR Garrett Wilson (knee) and RB Breece Hall (knee). Smith's arrival also confirms that Justin Fields (knee) is no longer in the team's plans.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Set to be released

Barring a trade, the Las Vegas Raiders will release Geno Smith (ankle) prior to the start of the new league year March 11, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Smith, who is now entering his age-36 season, will depart Las Vegas after just one season with the team, as the Raiders are widely projected to select a new starting quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. After a resurgent three-year stint in Seattle from 2022-24, Smith's inaugural campaign with Las Vegas represented a significant decline, as he completed 67 percent of his passes for just 3,025 yards and a 19:17 TD:INT. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the Raiders have aggressively worked to manufacture a potential trade for Smith in recent days, but it's likelier the veteran signal-caller draws interest on the free-agent market than in a scenario where suitors have to part with draft capital to acquire him. Smith missed Week 18 due to an ankle issue but does not appear to still be dealing with any injury, given he's been the subject of trade talks.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Officially ruled out for Sunday

Geno Smith (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's season finale against the Chiefs. With Smith out for the contest, coach Pete Carroll noted Friday (without naming a QB starter) that Kenny Pickett and Aidan O'Connell would be in a rotation Sunday, Levi Edwards of the Las Vegas Raiders' official site reports. In his first season with the 2-14 Raiders, Smith threw for 3,025 yards to go along with 19 TDs and 17 picks in 15 games. Though the veteran signal-caller currently is under contract with Las Vegas through the 2027 season, it's very possible that the team will be using one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft on a QB.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Not slated to start Sunday

Coach Pete Carroll noted Wednesday that Geno Smith (ankle) is not in line to play Sunday against the Chiefs, Ryan McFadden of ESPN.com reports.Smith emerged from Week 17 action with a concerning ankle injury, and in terms of the QB's availability versus Kansas City, Carroll said, "I hate closing the door on any opportunity, but it's going to be really hard for him." With that in mind, look for Smith to be officially ruled out by Friday, and in that scenario Carroll indicated that he expects Kenny Pickett and Aidan O'Connell to compete for the Week 18 starting nod, adding that he anticipates both signal-callers seeing action this weekend.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Has significant ankle injury

Coach Pete Carroll clarified Monday that Geno Smith avoided a high-ankle sprain but is still dealing with a significant ankle injury after exiting Sunday's loss to the Giants, Ryan McFadden of ESPN.com reports.Smith seems highly unlikely to play in next Sunday's regular-season finale against the Chiefs. Kenny Pickett will likely draw the start against Kansas City. The Smith acquisition by Las Vegas has gone about as poorly as imaginable, as Smith is 2-13 across his 15 starts and leads the league with 17 interceptions. He'll likely be one-and-done with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Has high-ankle sprain

Head coach Pete Carroll said after Sunday's 34-10 loss to the Giants that Geno Smith has a high-ankle sprain, Ryan McFadden of ESPN.com reports.Smith exited in the second half due to an ankle injury, which has since been determined to be a high-ankle sprain. Such injuries typically recover multiple weeks to recover from, so Smith is unlikely to be available for the regular-season finale against the Chiefs. Kenny Pickett would be in line to start in Week 18 if Smith is unavailable. The Las Vegas Raiders would secure the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft with a loss to Kansas City.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Won't return Sunday

Geno Smith (ankle) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's contest against the Giants.Smith was initially listed as questionable after injuring his ankle early in the fourth quarter, but he's now been ruled out with under two minutes remaining in Sunday's contest and Las Vegas down 34-10. If Smith's ankle injury impacts his availability for the Las Vegas Raiders' regular-season finale against Kansas City in Week 18, Kenny Pickett will stand to close out the team's 2025 campaign under center.

Raiders' Geno Smith: Ankle injury, questionable to return

Geno Smith (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Giants, Ryan McFadden of ESPN.com reports.Smith limped off the field under his own power in the fourth quarter with the Las Vegas Raiders already down 27-10. If Smith is unable to return Sunday, Kenny Pickett will pilot Las Vegas' offense as the team attempts to orchestrate an unlikely comeback. Smith completed 20 of 28 pass attempts for 176 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before his departure.
