Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Sermon sustained a concussion Sunday during the 49ers' 17-11 victory in Philadelphia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
After Elijah Mitchell suffered a shoulder injury in the second half Sunday, Sermon finally was called upon for his first NFL action. It didn't go well at all, with the rookie third-rounder taking an elbow to the helmet, fumbling in the process. The play ultimately was nullified by an Eagles penalty, but Sermon remained on the turf for a bit before going to the sideline and eventually the locker room. Now that he's in the concussion protocol, there's no telling when he'll be cleared for game action. As for the rest of the backfield, both Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) have health concerns postgame, so the entire backfield bears monitoring as the 49ers prepare to host the Packers in Week 3.
