McKinstry is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
The Tigers will keep McKinstry on the bench along with fellow left-handed hitter Colt Keith while southpaw Foster Griffin takes the hill for the Guardians. Corey Julks was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday and will step in for McKinstry in right field in his Tigers debut.
