Carpenter is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Kansas City.
Royals starting pitcher lefty Cole Ragans has reverse splits, but the left-handed-hitting Carpenter nonetheless will begin the festivities on the bench. Justyn-Henry Malloy will slide into the designated-hitter slot.
