The Pirates placed Yates on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder impingement.
Yates hasn't pitched since Saturday, so it could be an injury that's nagged at him for a while. The veteran reliever will be eligible for activation Sept. 15, though it's unclear at this point if he will be ready to go on that date. Khristian Curtis is grabbing Yates's roster spot.
