The Mets designated Alvarez for assignment Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Max Kranick, who made the National League Wild Card Series roster as a long reliever. Alvarez didn't join the Mets' organization until September and, thus, was ineligible for their postseason roster.
