Ornelas elected to become a free agent Friday, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports.

Ornelas passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from the Brewers' 40-man roster. Rather than accepting an outright assignment, the utility infielder has exercised his right to free agency. The 26-year-old is a career .203/.253/.230 hitter over 80 plate appearances in the majors.
