Elmore elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Elmore struggled mightily in the majors this season, slashing .206/.263/.284 and wasn't much better with Triple-A Durham, as he hit just .247 in 57 games at the level. The 28-year-old has never enjoyed much success at the big league level, but he'll look to find a spot where he can compete for an Opening Day roster spot out of spring training.
