Phillies' Jhoan Duran: Escapes with 23rd save
Duran recorded his 23rd save of the season in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Nationals, giving up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one.
One night after blowing his first save as a Phillie, Duran was back on the mound, and the Nats nearly got to him again as back-to-back one-out hits put runners on the corners. The right-hander buckled down and struck out James Wood before getting CJ Abrams to fly out to end the game. Over nine appearances with his new club, Duran has delivered a 1.17 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 9:0 K:BB in 7.2 innings while converting seven of eight save chances.

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Back in win column
Nola (2-7) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Nationals, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six.
The veteran right-hander shut down the Washington offense for four frames before beginning to fade, and he served up solo shots to CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia in the sixth inning. Nola still left the mound after 97 pitches (64 strikes) with his first win, and first quality start, since May 3, having missed three months over the summer with ankle and rib injuries. He'll look to build on this performance in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against Atlanta.

Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Belts seventh homer in win
Sosa went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Nationals.
Sosa drew the start at second base versus left-hander Mitchell Parker, blasting his seventh homer of the year and his third of the month of August. The righty-hitting Sosa has a definitive short-side platoon role -- he sports a .917 OPS against lefties in 2025 -- though his .558 OPS against righties will likely continue to prevent him from seeing regular at-bats. Bryson Stott boasts a 1.049 OPS so far this month, which is also working against Sosa's ability to pick up more playing time at the keystone.

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Having season-ending surgery
Wheeler (shoulder) will undergo season-ending thoracic outlet decompression surgery, Paul Casella of MLB.com reports.
Wheeler underwent a procedure Monday to remove a blood clot in his right shoulder. Since then, he's been diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome, which will require a more significant surgery. The projected recovery timeline is 6-8 months, which puts Wheeler's 2026 Opening Day availability in doubt. He'll finish the 2025 season with a 10-5 record, a 2.71 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and a 195:33 K:BB across 149.2 innings.

Phillies' Jhoan Duran: Blows first save as Phillie
Duran (6-5) blew the save and took the loss Friday, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits in the ninth inning as the Phillies fell 5-4 to the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter.
Called in to protect a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, Duran gave up a one-out double to Dylan Crews and an RBI single to Daylen Lile to tie the game. Lile then stole third and scampered home on a J.T. Realmuto throwing error for the winning run, tagging Duran with his first blown save in seven chances since being acquired by Philadelphia. Despite the stumble, the right-hander still has a 1.35 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 8:0 K:BB over 6.2 innings for his new team, and his spot as closer is in no jeopardy.

Phillies' Taijuan Walker: Fans five in no-decision
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Nationals, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five.
All the damage came on a first-inning homer by Riley Adams, but Walker kept his focus and got taken off the hook for the loss when the Phillies tied things up in the bottom of the sixth. Top prospect Andrew Painter still lurks as a rotation option for the stretch run, but Walker's been steady as the team's fifth starter, lasting at least five innings in six straight trips to the mound while posting a 2.88 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 34.1 innings. The veteran righty is scheduled to make his next start on the road next week in a crucial NL East clash with the Mets.

Phillies' Nick Castellanos: Getting day off Wednesday
Castellanos is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Castellanos will head to the bnech for the third time in 11 games. He had been out of the lineup just twice this season prior to that, once due to disciplinary reasons and once due to a minor injury. The Phillies will go with Brandon Marsh, Harrison Bader and Max Kepler in the outfield Wednesday.
