USA 2-2 Spain (FT)
FULLTIME: Mallory Swanson makes her return to the scoreboard with an equalizer against Spain

The U.S. women's national team showed why you can never count them out. USWNT manager Emma Hayes and the squad rallied for a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against Spain in a friendly on Tuesday.
The game was as back and forth as the scoreline suggests. Spain, the reigning World Cup champions, got on the scoreboard first, once again in the opening half hour, almost mirroring the energy from the first game. They struck twice in the span of five minutes. Alexia Putellas was left unmarked for a tap-in, and just moments later, Salma Paralluelo rattled a goal off the underbar following a poor pass out of the back.
Ashley Sanchez and Mallory Swanson scored the goals that pulled the Americans level, and Hayes showed off her in-game adjustments that led to the comeback. Sanchez scored in the opening minutes of the second half, following a breakaway led by Sophia Wilson.
Sanchez's goal comes nearly four years after her previous tally for the USWNT. She last started for the national team in October 2024, and after a two-year hiatus, her incredible club form and goal-scoring have her back in the mix after Tuesday's performance. Her efforts will only make roster decisions more difficult for the coaches moving forward.
"I feel like I tried to do everything I could in this environment to learn as quick as I could, and learn our tactics, and you know, I guess, get the expectations that Emma had for me, and hopefully surpass those. So yeah, I feel like I did as best as I can, and going back in the club just to continue the form that I'm in," Sanchez said about her return to the national team.
Swanson's goal came later in the game, following a flurry of substitutions she was a part of, and showed off her clinical ability with a touch in the box before scoring the equalizer.
It was the first goal for Swanson since scoring the game-winning goal for the USWNT in the 2024 Olympic gold medal final, and her first since her return from maternity leave. After the game, the forward spoke about working her way back into form.
"My conversations with Emma, I think that she knows that everyone's body is different, especially coming back from pregnancy, and she's lived it before, and so she's just super supportive in that, and continues just to like believe in me and put that self-belief in me that it's doable, and just keep on taking those steps. You know, it's a long process, and she keeps reminding me of that. I think this was a good step forward," Swanson said.
With momentum fully in the USWNT's favor down the stretch, the group had more chances in the waning minutes, including a deflected shot by Lily Yohannes, but the second-half rally flipped the script against Spain, who had the better result on Saturday and an equally impressive half at Subaru Park.
Now Hayes and the group will look ahead to World Cup qualifiers in November.
FULLTIME: Mallory Swanson makes her return to the scoreboard with an equalizer against Spain
90+7' Yohannes tries a shot from distance and takes a deflection off Patri, but it's a save for Misa!
86' MAL SWANSON TO THE RESCUE! The USWNT wrangle the ball back from space, and after some ping-ponging around the box, it lands to Swanson, who nails the shot.
79' For context, this series allows eight subs, and there appears to be more coming for the USWNT. Kate Del Fava comes into the game for Tierna Davidson. Pietra Tordin also comes into the game for Ashley Sanchez.
After a brief delay and a player advantage as Andrea Medina was receiving treatment on the sidelines, the USWNT has switched up some things positionally. Sanchez appears to be more of an attacking mid now, with Swanson and Wilson higher, and Alyssa Thompson is handling left-back responsibilities.
69' Putting Spain under some pressure nearly pays off. Lily Yohannes gets on the ball and breaks the line with runners in transition. Mallory Swanson carries the ball in, and she gets a good shot off, but it's saved by Misa.
67' The subs have made a notable difference in energy. The team is pressing as a collective and making Spain turn the ball over.
Alexia Putellas also leaves the game for Flamma Benitez. Putellas scored her 43rd goal in her 150th appearance for Spain today.
Michelle Cooper, Alyssa Thompson, Lily Yohannes, Jaelin Howelle, and Mallory Swanson are into the game now. Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Gisele Thompson, Claire Hutton, and Trinity Rodman make their exits.
57' Four players are getting instructions at the moment to come into the game. Heaps is currently down on the pitch after colliding with other Spain players.
49' SANCHEZ HAS A GOAL! The winger cuts into Spain's lead, and it's 2-1 now early in the second half. Wilson led the team into a fast break and cut the ball out wide to Sanchez. The winger's cut into the box generated enough space to finish with her right, and the ball slots through near the far post.
No substitutes to start the second half for the USWNT. Hernandez, Paralluelo, and Imade come off for Spain, with Redondo, Corrales, and Batlle on in their place.
Well, there's definitely work to be done on this one. The group looks like they need an injection of new energy asap. Whether it's the quick turnaround between games or what, there are some gassed players out there, and the lack of ideas is starting to show.
45' It's officially stoppage time now, and for whatever ball wins, the USWNT get they concede it right back. Some "just get to halftime" energy out there at the moment.
40' Now down two goals, the USWNT is right back where they were on Saturday. Some players are showing frustration with chasing the game now, and Spain are more than happy to pass around them.
33' PARAUELLO SCORES! Spain punishes the USWNT backline following a misplaced pass out of the back by Tullis-Joyce.
27' A TAP IN FOR PUTELLAS! Spain makes the USWNT pay for not stepping into challenges; Serrajordi threads a ball inside the box, its dummied, and a left for a tap in by Putellas. Her 43rd goal in her 150th appearance for Spain.
20' The USWNT responds with a pair of corner attempts of their own. Some good combination play with Heaps and G. Thompson advances the ball up the pitch and finds Sanchez, who wins the second corner kick of the match. The service in by Lavelle is defended away, and there's now a stoppage of play while a Spain defender Oihane Hernandez gets attended to by trainers.
Spain is winning the set-piece battle so far, with three corners won in the opening 15 minutes. They also have two shots, both on target, though nothing has broken through, and the USWNT are getting into dangerous spaces when on the ball.
14' Spain slows things down for a dangerous attack. The USWNT backline is beaten on a line-breaking pass by Putellas, and Clara Pinedo gets to the end of it, and her quick shot is saved by Tullis-Joyce.
8' Spain finds their way into the attacking half, and Alexia Putellas connects with Salma Paralluelo, but the shot attempt is saved by Phallon Tulls-Joyce.
6' Lindsey Heaps threads a long ball through to Sophia Wilson on the run, and the striker keeps the stride up against her defender and tries a shot from distance to test Misa Rodriguez early.
4' Ashley Sanchez earns her first start since October 2024, and she gets a pass off into the box that is snuffed out by Spain. La Roja have already earned the first free kick of the night.
The match is just a few minutes away, so let's have a little fun with a prediction for the game.
Herrera's prediction: It'll be a different game from Saturday, with the USWNT likely bringing more physicality and proactive play against Spain. It'll be enough to finally get on the scoreboard, but maybe not enough to squeeze out a win. Pick: Draw, 1-1.
If the USWNT looked somewhat rusty against Spain in the opening minutes on Saturday, a long break between camps and missing key players could be to blame. The group is back together for the first time since June friendlies in Brazil. Chuck Booth has more on Hayes:
Booth: "This is where the work-in-progress nature of the team begins to show. Not only is Hayes without players who have been regulars in the team, but players are still figuring out those relationships alongside each other while playing tough matches. These are reps that will pay off, though. Few teams in the world can give the United States the level of challenge that Spain have, and they'll be better for experiencing it."

Forward Ashley Sanchez returned to the national team with a call-up to this camp for the first time since January 2025. She's leading the NWSL golden boot race with 20 goals, tying a single-season league record, and was an impact sub against Spain on Saturday. Read more about her incredible season and journey back to USWNT camps.

Sophia Wilson led the USWNT with three shots and two attempts on target Saturday. If she gets the start again, she'll likely be a focal point in the attack. Pardeep Cattry has the latest on the strikers insights:
Wilson: "I think the cool opportunity is we get to play the same team a few days later," Wilson said. "We get to rest a little bit but also prepare and make the changes that we need to but also focus on what we did well in the game and taking those into the next game as well. I think it'll be a completely different game regardless of the fact that it's the same two teams."

Looks like Spain is also making a few rotations, notably in goal with Misa getting the start, and Patri and Putellas back in the midfield:
Here's how the USWNT is lining up tonight. Head coach Emma Hayes mentioned less rotation between games, but there are still some familiar faces from Saturday's game in the lineup:
USA starting XI: 24-Phallon Tullis-Joyce; 2-Trinity Rodman, 7-Ashley Sanchez, 10-Lindsey Heaps (Capt.), 11-Sophia Wilson, 12-Tierna Davidson, 15-Claire Hutton, 16-Rose Lavelle, 22-Gisele Thompson, 23-Emily Fox, 25-Kennedy Wesley
Available Subs: 1-Claudia Dickey, 3-Avery Patterson, 4-Kate Del Fava, 5-Tara Rudd, 6-Lily Yohannes, 9-Mallory Swanson, 13-Pietra Tordin, 17-Jaelin Howell, 19-Emma Sears, 20-Michelle Cooper, 21-Alyssa Thompson, 26-Evelyn Shores
Not dressing: Trinity Byars, Jordan Silkowitz, Lilly Reale
